Learning English through Comics

EVA Mª GUERRERO SÁNCHEZ

THE USE OF MULTIMEDIA IN THE CLASSROOM: TEACHING LANGUAGE, LITERATURE AND THEIR LANGUAGE

Level: 2º, 3º ESO

Materials: Any comic in English

The purpose of this activity is to make students confident in their knowledge of English, making them aware that they know more English than they think and showing them how the context (the cartoons) helps them understand the meaning of the story.

The students are given a typed transcription containing the dialogues of the first chapter of a well known comic (Spiderman, X-Men,...).

After reading it, the teacher asks the big group what it is about, what happens in the story, who is speaking, where the story is taking place, and so on. After the discussion, they will be given the text in its original format (the comic itself).

The group read the first chapter again, and the same questions are made to check whether they have understood more of the story than before, and asking them how the context (the cartoons) has helped them understand the text.

The end of the activity will consist of watching the cinematographic version of the comic, comparing these two different ways of telling the same story and working on the characters, the setting, the events happening in each version, etc...
