 Colwyn Bay Rugby Club is home to the Mermaids - the most succesful girls rugby teams in North Wales for the past 3 years. Girls rugby was first started at CBRFC in 2005 with the creation of an U16 team. By the end of the first season the girls section had grown in size and in 2006 there were 2 teams - U14 and U17. At the end of the 2006 season both teams were at the top of the North Wales league and were awarded trophies by the Welsh Rugby Union. In 2007 the U17 team once again came top in North Wales. In 2008 the WRU decided to bring the age bands in line with other rugby unions and the teams were regraded as U15 and U18. Both teams have members who are also in the regional Gogledd Cymru squad - this season (2008-2009) every player in the U18 Mermaids was selected to represent the region and one player was also selected for the Wales U20 squad.
