Welcome to College Prep: Perspectives in Literature!

In this class we will examine literature using different critical lenses.  We will practice reading challenging pieces and communicating our ideas visually and in writing.  When you are finished, you will have reflected deeply, applied several different critical perspectives to your analysis of literature, analyzed media texts, and created your own media text.  You will be prepared for college level English whether you are moving on to college life or taking an Advanced Placement course.  Welcome!

Please read both Welcome Letter and course syllabus attached below.

Tuesday  10 November 2009

We continued to read Baldwin’s “Stranger in the Village.”  We will finish this on Thursday and begin EA 2.  Please think about an event in which you or someone you know felt like a “stranger in the village” or was perceived as “strange” by some group.  This will be the subject for your essay.  We will begin drafting on Thursday.

Monday  9 November 2009

We read and discussed through page 74 (Baldwin’s “Stranger in the Village”).  We began reading the next four paragraphs (Chunk 5).  We will continue reading and discussing tomorrow.

We also discussed and defined irony, satire, and sarcasm in addition to our regular vocabulary.

Friday  6 November 2009

We read and analyzed Baldwin’s “Stranger in the Village” through paragraph six.  We identified tone and selected evidence to support our assertions.

********************************

Thursday  5 November 2009

We began reading Baldwin’s “Stranger in the Village” by first scanning the text for unfamiliar words and then defining and replacing them.

We then read through the first paragraph and analyzed Baldwin’s set up of his circumstances and use of the word “sight.”

Wednesday  4 November 2009

We reviewed the concept of being a stranger in the village and also reviewed the excerpt from The Joy Luck Club.  We discussed using dialog and looked again at Tan’s use of dialog in the excerpt.

Take your writing from yesterday and determine how best to include dialog.  Revise your writing using the instructions at the bottom of page 68.  Turn in your revision with your first draft.

Tuesday  3 November 2009

We defined for ourselves what it means to be a “stranger in the village.”

We then completed a short essay on the prompt on page 66.  We then read an excerpt from The Joy Luck Club on pages 67 and 68 and discussed how the stranger in the village concept is presented here.  Re-read this section, noting the impact of the dialog the author uses.

Monday  2 November 2009

We brainstormed synonyms for “stranger” and “village” and discussed connotative meanings of those terms.  We viewed a clip from Edward Scissorhands and identified techniques used by the filmmaker to identify Edward as an “outsider.”

Wednesday  28 October 2009

We discussed the end of Orwell’s “Shooting an Elephant” and wrote a short thesis statement identifying theme.

We participated in an exercise where we had to figure out by example how to “belong” to a group.  We will discuss how we felt both when we were on the “outside” and when we were on the “inside” on Monday.

*******************************

Tuesday  27 October 2009

We continued reading “Shooting an Elephant”.  With a partner, we created levels of questions for chunk 5 and discussed them as a class.  We then read through the end.  We will finish our discussion tomorrow.

*******************************

Monday  26 October 2009

We began reading Orwell’s “Shooting an Elephant” analyzing using a Cultural criticism lens.

*******************************

Friday  23 October 2009

We completed a close reading and cultural analysis of “Rule Britannia”.  We connected some of the ideas expressed to what we know and have learned about imperialism and then viewed a modern recording of the song.  We discussed how people’s attitudes about what is important in the song might have changed over time.

We also thought about what we know about Burma and George Orwell.  We received some background knowledge about both as the author and setting of the text we will read on Monday, “Shooting an Elephant.”

***********************************

Thursday  22 October 2009

In groups we analyzed two poems that both speak to each other and illustrate something about the idea of imperialism, Kipling's "The White Man's Burden" and Labouchere's "The Brown Man's Burden".  We anayzed both from a cultural perspective.

***************************************

Wednesday  21 October 2009

We completed a short vocabulary review of the words we have studied so far this year.

We considered what we know about the concept of “imperialism” using the graphic organizer on page 48.
