Testing the Water with a Summer Job

Summer jobs can be a great way to get some experience in the work force, help you figure out what you want to do with your life AND earn some bucks. Did you know you can work at shops, restaurants, retail stores, etc., in California starting at age 14?
 
You will need a work permit, which starts with a permit application. You get this application, called "EC 49162 Notification of Intent to Employ" from the school counselor.
 
Once you and your new employer fill this out, simply bring it to the school; they will complete their part and send in your permit application to the state.
 
Some resources to help you look for a part-time or summer job are online. Stores like Jamba Juice, Target, Best Buy, restaurants like California Pizza Kitchen and movie theaters all post part-time jobs on these websites. Check them out:
