Campsite Rules, General Responsibilities and Conditions
We welcome you to Collard Bridge Scout Campsite. The Campsite Committee insists that conservation is paramount in its operation. We have drawn up guidelines for your benefit, ensuring that your stay will be pleasurable and at the same time enabling us to continue our work in this lovely part of North Devon.
UPDATE AUGUST 2011 re Chinese Lanterns - they are not to be let off from our campsite as they pose a danger to campers - we have had two land fully lit in the site.
UPDATE JULY 2010 re rubbish, recycling and wet pits - see Sections lower down.
Leaders: The camp leader at all times will be responsible for the campers and visitors. North Devon District Scout Council and Campsite staff shall not be liable for any loss or damage to property or personal injury sustained whilst on the premises, howsoever caused. The Committee shall not be held liable for refunds in the event of adverse weather conditions or any other reason for visitors terminating their stay on the site early. It is the responsibility of all Leaders to ensure that no damage is caused to the site. Your allocated pitch and the whole campsite should be respected and kept in a clean and orderly condition. Please show consideration for other campers and our neighbours. Our campsite is to remain a quiet campsite from 11pm until 7:30am - all we want to hear is the trickling water and the owls.
Buildings: ABSOLUTELY NO COOKING is permitted in the Rendle Hut. No naked flames are allowed in the Linhay. All buildings should be left tidy with lights off.
Dogs are not allowed on the campsite at all: If you have visitors please ensure this rule is strictly enforced. Guide dogs are the only exception, and arrangements for clearing up and sanitising after the guide dog must be made and carried out.
All Vehicles: The 10mph speed restriction must be observed at all times. Vehicles (this includes trailers) are not allowed onto the campsites or ANY other grassed areas. Vehicles must park in the designated parking areas and not on the road, even for unloading.
Out of bounds for all activities: The entrance car park, the River Yeo, the bank of the river opposite sites 1 and 2, which is private property and the area above the car park near site 7.
Fences: In true Scouting spirit, we have fences on site for reasons. Please ensure your leaders and young people do not make shortcuts under or over them.
River Yeo: Beware rivers are particularly dangerous at times of fast flow. Access is not permitted as the River Yeo is out of bounds. The river and stream is not suitable as drinking water. Please also ensure that the streams that run through the site are not dammed up as an activity as often young people like to do this, but this causes big problems in other parts of the site. The fishing rights do not belong to us.
Timber: No timber may be felled whatsoever. Some timber may be found stockpiled under the large beech tree. Please use this timber sensibly, we often find camps with large fires earlier in the season and our supplies are then exhausted later on. Fallen timber is freely available in the woods. You can also have logs delivered by an external contractor. All wood is to be returned to the wood pile at the end of your camp.
Fires: Fire pits are not to be dug unless specific permission has been sought from the wardens or committee in a designated zone. Altar fires are available for your use and should be emptied, once cool, into the ash bag near the beech tree. Please note that only certain sites are now permitted to have an altar fire on and in specific places - see wardens and speak to our booking secretary to check. All unused wood is to be returned to the wood pile. Please also ensure that grassed areas are not scorched by altar fires or falling pieces of burning or hot timber. In the fire areas there are oak chopping logs for chopping on - do not remove or burn.
Refuse Disposal: The contents of latrine buckets must be properly disposed of in the designated area, the single drain cover, near the toilets. Please remove all of your rubbish that you are unable to burn; we do have a rubbish collection service at peak times (May half term - Whitweek and during the main school summer holidays). Each group will be given recycling boxes during late July and August for groups to place sorted and clean recycling items. these will be inspected by the wardens before you are asked to put in the appropriate recycling bins. Have consideration for the animal wildlife. The nearest refuse dump is situated just past the Leisure Centre in Barnstaple - turn right at Jewsons and follow the road to the end. Dumping of any rubbish or ash will result in your group to clear it up, your deposit will be taken, your Home DC will be informed and your group will be asked to leave the site.
RECYCLING:
The committee pride themselves in the reduce, reuse and recycle ethos. It is something that we insist campers carry out. We want all campers to adhere to this. We will ask that you reduce, reuse and recycle. In Late July and August, recycling boxes will be issued to each group to place sorted and clean recyclable materials in - these will be inspected by the wardens and service crew before the main recycling bins will be opened for you to put your recycling in. In Barnstaple there are several recycling facilities at Tesco, Sainsburys and at the refuse dump near the Leisure Centre in Barnstaple.
Wet Pits: No wet pits to be dug unless specific permission has been sought from the wardens or committee in a designated zone. Grey water is to be screened to remove all food matter and binned. The water is to be disposed of responsibly around the camp site (recycle: water plants and trees).
Toilets: Please ensure that the toilets are cleaned at least once a day. If others are on the site, arrange with them as to who does what. The Duty Warden will at busy times display a cleaning rota. Remember to leave the toilet block, as you would wish to find them. You will need to supply your own soap and toilet rolls/paper. It is the responsibility of each site to clean the toilet block, if a rota has not be drawn up and posted on the noticeboard outside the toilet block, then please arrange with the other campers on site who is cleaning them. At the end of the camp please ensure they are thoroughly cleaned and bins emptied. Any damage is to be reported immediately to the duty warden or booking secretary.
Picnic benches: Each site has an allocated picnic bench or benches. The benches are not to be moved on or off to other sites, this causes damage to the benches.
Fridges and Freezers: Please ensure that they are cleaned with an antibacterial cleaner - supplies are often by the fridge. The fridges and freezers are to be emptied on your departure. Please remember that the fridges and freezers are for all campers on site so please use appropriately.
Site Security: It is strongly recommended that, for the security of your property, the entrance gate remains locked. The gate must be kept locked overnight - this is to be agreed with other campers of when and who does this.
Generators: Generators are not to be used on the campsite as they can spoil the quiet of the evening for other campers
NB: The North Devon District Scout Council reserves the right to ask any Group to vacate the site and make good any damage caused. We thank you for your co-operation.
Please remember, in the interests of the children’s safety, the no dogs and 10mph speed limit rules.
