We have a range of building on site including a purpose built toilet and shower block, Linhay building, main hut and a smaller hut. We now have a purpose built tarmac road through the site (added May 2009) - we do ask that you do not drive on the edges to keep it in tact.
Linhay Building: This is a converted building with an open front, but is lockable. This houses our fridges and freezers allowing groups the facility to keep food or ice pack frozen or refrigerated. We also have a table tennis table available for use - please provide your own bats and ping pong balls. This is also a good retreat in severe weather. PLEASE NOTE NO NAKED FLAMES IN THIS BUILDING. Running Water: We have a wonderful water supply from our own spring which is UV treated and filtered - no nasty chlorine taste. Taps are dotted around the site for convenience - most sites now have their own tap. We also have small springs and streams in the site and running adjacent to the whole site is the River Yeo. We recommend that you bring your own short hose to attach to the taps to fill your water - due to regulations we are unable to supply them. The other running water does not always come, but do be prepared for the rain, but we will do our best to book sunshine for you. Toilet and Shower Block: We have male and female toilets, along with a disabled toilet. There is hot and cold running water - in August 2009 we had a new water heating system installed. We have two individual showers (and yes itis with hot water). Groups are to maintain the toilets themselves and bring toilet rolls and their own soap for handwashing. Bleach must not be used as we have septic underground tanks. If more than one group is on site, we ask groups to negotiate a cleaning rota between them. In May 2010 we an additional toilet block installed for leaders - this encompasses an electric shower, two toilets and two urinals. Main Hut (Rendle Hut): This a generously sized building that has chairs and tables in it. This is available to hire for daytime use, but is not for residential use. ABSOLUTELY NO COOKING IS PERMITTED in the Rendle Hut. The Steve Hawkins' Hut (Warden's Office): This again is a useful facility available to hire for leaders to use as a retreat, or as a first aid facility for big events etc. This has some tables and a few chairs in it. Activities Hut: This is a new addition to the site for Easter 2010. This is usable for a maximum of two hours per group per day - this is to prevent groups having a monopoly on this. If you are the only group on site, then you have the flexibility of using it. It can be used for a range of covered activities including the free use of our bouldering wall. Please ask for details.
Main Arena:
We have a large area for the use of all groups on-site whilst staying on site. We have a set of football goals that can be used, as well as a volleyball net and post during the main season (please ask if you require this). Campfire Circle: This is a good size area with tiered seating that can seat approximately 100+ people. Quiet Seating Area:
A lovely seating area is at the top of our hill so you can sit and have a Scouts Own service, a circle time, just time to gather and chat or just to escape and admire the view. Enjoy. The wardens have already. We just ask you respect the seats and don't be tempted to peel off the bark. Thank you. Wood Pile: We have a designated wood pile which does contain nails, as we do have pallets included in the woodpile, along with other wood. We also have wood scattered around the site for use. Any unused wood must be returned back to the woodpile before you depart. You may make arrangements to have a local delivery of wood made - we can advise on log merchants. Altar fires: We have altar fires available for use on designated camping sites, which have designated areas within your campsite and for use in our designated fire building areas. All we ask is that before you depart you ensure they are cold and empty - contents to be emptied in dumpy bag under the large beech tree. Pioneering Poles: There are some new pioneering poles that may be loaned by prior arrangement from the site. Picnic Tables:We have some picnic tables in communal areas, so groups can gather and use them where they are. Leaders often use them as a meeting point for wide games or for small group activities. Please do not remove from their positions as this damages them and causes inconvenience to other campers, the wardens and Service Crew. Tables and chairs: By prior arrangement we have some chairs on site for loan for free. We do have some new (2010) Go-Pak tables and benches available to hire. Fridges and Freezers: We have two full size fridges and a 3 freezers for convenience. All we ask is that they are kept clean and when you leave you empty your food and ice packs from them for other campers. Please remember that they are for all users so please limit your fridge stock. Rubbish: All we do ask is that you respect the site and ensure all litter is disposed of in your own bins and taken away with you or please clean your glass and tins and you can recycle at the recycling centre in Barnstaple. We do have a have a rubbish collection service during the peak season (Whitweek and the main six week summer holidays). Please talk to our booking secretary for advice on rubbish. Camping Sites: We have seven sites available to book for activities in the day time or for camping on. See our campsites page for more details (click here). Please note that we have a new ruling that only on sites 1, 4, 6 and 7 can fire be lit and they must be in the designated areas and using the altar fires. We do also have other areas available for survival style camping. Please ask for details.
Shopping: Nearby we have a range of local shops and supermarkets. We have camping shop supplies, DIY superstores, outdoor clothing and all sorts of other shops in or around Barnstaple town centre. We also have a postcode for the site so internet supermarket shopping is possible to be delivered to the site. Local churches: There are several churches in the area and one of our Beaver Leaders in the District does have a connection to a vicar in nearby Bratton Fleming - she is married to him. Details can be passed onto you if you would like to join parishioners in a service. |
