Why does the sound of nails down a blackboard freak so many people out?
Research was conducted in the 80s into the most unpleasant sounds. A garden tool scraped across a piece of slate (same ideas as nails down a blackboard) came out as the one people hated the most. Scientists analysed the sound frequencies and realised it's identical to the warning sound of a Maccau Monkey. They think our reaction to this song is a left-over from our ape days and a built in reflex. We hear the sound and at a deep level it makes us think we're in terrible danger.

Normally these come from old-time, hardcore fans near the back of the stadium or sitting up the back on supporter's club busses. Please be aware that some people have suffered allergic reactions to Kiwi fruits, just like some people have nut allergies etc.
Does Britain still have the death penalty for extreme cases?
No. Not under any circumstances. We did keep it for treason and piracy with violence until 1998 when it was abolished entirely as part of Britain's move towards implementing European Human Rights legislation. Scots Law does still contain some bizarre ancient laws - regarding the theft of sheep and sale of coffee - which we'll look into another time.

Yes. But "legal tender" is an old English phrase meaning that they can be used when a court orders you to pay a fine. So in the old days, someone forced to pay a fine in England could have used stamps. Scotland has no such thing as "legal tender". You can pay by anything you want, even a cabbage or a donkey, as long as the shop keeper agrees to accept it. And if they refuse, they are refusing to make the sale, not refusing to take your money.

Who is it that decides what age ratings films get? I imagine it being one old guy?
This is the BBFC and rather than one old guy watching the films its a team of examiners. They range in age from early 20s to late 60s and as well as watching films and videos they play video games too, normally working in pairs. There's 20 of them and they work on 5 year contracts. They even get the cheat codes so they can move through all the levels of video games quickly. There's a criteria that helps them decide what the age limit should be but for difficult ones it is referred to more senior people in the organisation.
