A BASIC DESCRIPTION
Informative Links
Some VoIP Programs | This page was created as part of a class assignment in CIS 367 at the University of Southern Indiana. It is not intended to be a complete description of VoIP, but it is designed to inform the average Joe about the basics of VoIP technology. Links are provided along the left-hand side of this page for individuals who want to delve deeper into the workings of VoIP. What is VoIP?VoIP stands for "Voice over Internet Protocol". VoIP is basically voice communications that are transmitted over the Internet instead of traditional phone lines. Your conversation is sent to the other party in a digital format, whereas traditional telephone circuits transmit analog data. How does VoIP work? The following diagram does a good job of illustrating the way that VoIP works. The diagram was found on this website. Your
speech, which is analog, is first converted into a digital format.
That data is then compressed, split into separate packets, and routed
to the correct destination over the Internet. Once that digital data
arrives, it must then be reassembled and converted back into audio. Why should I use VoIP? There are many benefits to using VoIP. It is very simple and easy to use, but perhaps the biggest benefit is the significantly lower cost in comparison to traditional telephone service. If you are using VoIP from your PC, you can make calls to anywhere in the world for FREE. If you decide to change your home phone service to VoIP, you have the option to pay just one low, flat rate for monthly service. VoIP is a very cheap and convenient way to talk with people all around the globe. What do I need in order to use VoIP?If you just plan on using your personal computer to make VoIP calls, then you don't need much at all. The only equipment required is some type of speakers and a microphone. You must also have a high-speed Internet connection. You can download a FREE VoIP program such as Skype, Gizmo, GloPhone, or BuddyTalk. There are countless numbers of these programs available today, but the previous four are some of the best and most popular options. You can also use VoIP as your main telephone service in your home. Companies such as Vonage are leading the way in this market. A comparison of VoIP providers can be found here. |
