GREETINGS FELLOW SENIOR GOLFERS,
March 2009

2009 TOURNEY SCHEDULE:

I have 30 tournaments planned for this year in a 22 week season.  New courses are Jackrabbit Run in Grand Island, Westwind GC in Ogallala, Southern Hills at Hastings, and back where it all started the Kearney Country Club.  I do have two tournaments several weeks, but tried to keep them separated by distance as much as possible.  You are allowed to play two the same week, just tell your wife that Andy said it was OK.  The two day Treadway Memorial will be held at my home course the Lakeside Country Club this year.  Your association is again adding a $10 cash flag prize on each hole each day, plus a sleeve of golf balls at registration.  The Treadway dinner is also your opportunity to elect the directors of CNSGA and to give your input into the association.  We added a $100 prize for a hole-in-one at each tournament, and still have the $1,000 hole-in-one prize at both the Treadway & Welch memorial tournaments.  We will again finish the year with back to back tournaments at Valentine and Ainsworth.  These two courses did a great job last year; 2009 will also include over $400 in added flag and door prizes donated by the Rosebud Casino and local businesses.  We have 11 events that allow you to pick your partner, as these have been very popular with many players.  I have had comments from several members who just do not like the burden of getting their own partner, or who simply enjoy meeting and playing with new partners.  All of the pick your partner events also allow you to sign up individually and the host club will assign a partner; so I encourage you to sign up individually.  We also have several more clubs planning a “Super Senior” flight for those 75 and older.

The sign-up sheets for 2009 tournaments are attached to this mailing; they need to be mailed directly to the course NOT to me.  As long time members know, some tournaments fill within a few days of this mailing, so I encourage you to get your entries mailed immediately.  Most clubs do not cash your checks until just before the tournament date so it isn’t an immediate cash drain to mail all your entries early.  Tournaments will all include 18 holes of golf, cart, and a full meal after golf. The courses will also have morning coffee & rolls and a noon sandwich available.

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS:

Your association annually awards scholarships to high school seniors with the emphasis on golf participation.   In 2009 CNSGA will again give two $1,000 scholarships.  The 2009 winners are Jordan Arensdorf of North Platte and Ellen Baldwin of Kearney.

Last year’s (2008) winners of $1,000 each were Kristopher Koelzer of Wood River and Katie Keiser of Gothenburg, we also named Jono Schwenka of Hastings and Samantha Nielson of Superior as alternates.

If you know of a deserving student, have them get an application from our web site, or call Scholarship Chairman Gary Mason at 308-234-3377.

HISTORY OF THE CENTRAL NEBRASKA SENIOR GOLF ASSOCIATION:

G.G. “Jerry” Treadway was a charter board member of the Nebraska Senior Golf Association which was formed in 1965 at Fremont.  Jerry later served as president of the NSGA in 1982.  During that time Jerry encouraged the NSGA to hold tournaments farther west in Nebraska with little success.  Serious discussions on starting our organization began during the summer of 1984.  On August 13, 1984 a group of senior golfers met at the Kearney Country Club, electing Jerry Treadway as acting President, Ted Richardson as acting Sec-Treas; and Dale Brownfield, Dean Candea, Wally Hopp, Al “Pug” Horn, and Lyle Teel as directors.  Treadway & Richardson then sent a recruiting letter to interested senior golfers, suggesting an initial tournament that fall, and 1-2 events per month the following year.  Interested golfers were to send $5 membership dues with the first 100 to be considered “charter members”, and a hope to get about 80 signed up.  A follow up letter stated “we have 181 paid members biting at the bit and ready to go”, so this group were considered as the “charter members”.  Charter members still on the 2008 membership roster include:  Charles Bourg, Dale Brownfield, Clint Hohnstein, Bob Lowry, Merlin Rathman, Gordon Reeves, Bob Sahling, Vernon Swanson and Norris Rusmisell.

The first tournament was held at Kearney Country Club October 2, 1984, with an entry fee of $25.00.  I could not find a list of tournaments for 1985, but charter members believe they had 6-8 one day tournaments.  There was also a 3 day tournament at Kearney CC on September 17-18-19, 1985.   The 1986 schedule shows 8 one day tournaments (Heritage Hills CC, McCook; Minden CC; Valley View CC, Central City; Deer Park, Valentine; Southern Hills, Hastings; Ogallala CC; Cozad CC; and Holdrege CC, plus a 2 day “state” tournament at Kearney CC.

Our group originated as the Western Nebraska State Senior Golf Association in 1984.  However it was soon learned that a Panhandle or Western NE Senior Golf Association was being organized at about the same time, so in 1985 the name was officially changed to the present Central Nebraska Senior Golf Association.  At the board meeting April 27, 1987 the annual two day “state” tournament was officially renamed the “Jerry Treadway Memorial Tournament”, and continues as our 2 day individual event.

In just over 2 years, the organization had grown to 458 members when Treadway and Richardson resigned due to health reasons.  Norris Rusmisell took over as president on August 25, 1986 with a treasury balance of $3,075.98.  Membership appears to have peaked at 653 in 1994, and has held steady at 500-550 the past several years.

TOURNAMENT POLICIES:

Your CNSGA directors voted to be a little more “hands-on” with our tournaments this year.  We do require host clubs to payback a minimum of 35% of the entry fees as tournament prizes, and this policy remains unchanged.  Some changes or reaffirmations of policies are:

n      First place should payback no more than 1-1½ times the entry fee (no change, just more firmly stated)

n      Require host clubs to divide the field into 2 or more flights by handicap, if more than 50 players

n      Most players will use the regular men’s tees

n      Super senior flights will use forward tees

n      Individuals over age 75 MAY be allowed to use forward tees in the higher handicapped flights ONLY

n      All choose your partner events MUST have both a gross and net payback

n      CNSGA reserves the right to adjust any individuals handicap based on past tournament scores

n      Treadway Memorial handicaps will be the lesser of a players current handicap OR the previous years Treadway scores

n      Choose your partner scrambles should use a “weighted” handicap system (ie 50% of the low handicap plus 25% of the higher handicap)

n      Choose your partner best ball events should give each individual at least 75-100% of their individual handicap, assigned by the handicap of the hole being played

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS:

In 2008 CNSGA gave two - $1,000 scholarships.  This year’s male winner was Kristopher Koelzer from Wood River.  The winning girl’s was Katie Keiser from Gothenburg.  Congratulations to these two golfer students.  If you know of a high school senior who is active in golf, have them contact our scholarship chairman Gary Mason or their high school counselor.

CNSGA TOURNAMENT POLICIES:

The goal of CNSGA is to have fun tournaments and give our members a chance to play several new courses at a reasonable cost followed by a nice meal.  Our goal is to have FUN not to score a huge PROFIT for the players.  If you want to play for huge prizes you are in the wrong organization.  Do not complain that won your flight but only got back your entry fee --- you also had received a round of golf, a nice meal, and the bragging rights on the trip home.  Our policy is for host clubs to pay back about 1 to 1½ times the entry fee for 1st place, and our agreements with the host clubs require 35% of the entry fee to be paid back to the players.  After the tournament pay back, and paying for meals, very little is left for carts and green fees.  In 2008 we did not have a single host club that netted their full green fees & cart rentals.  Our tournaments give CNSGA members a chance to play a nice course at a discounted rate, plus a meal, and the chance to do it for free.

CNSGA plans to continue drawings for golf balls before each tournament.  Beginning in 2009 we will give a $100 to any hole-in-one at any tournament.  We will also have $1,000 hole-in-one prizes at both the Welch Memorial and the Treadway Memorial tournaments.  Your association is also funding a $10 flag prize on each hole of the Treadway Memorial tournament as an added incentive to attend, so 36 of the players will effectively get a $10 discount on that entry fee.

WEB PAGE:

CNSGA web page at www.cnsga.com is back in operation. We do have a printable membership application, list of tournaments, list of our directors, scholarship application, and other information on the site.

2009 TOURNEY SCHEDULE:

We have a great season planned with 30 tournaments in 2009.  I have added Kearney CC, Grand Island’s Jackrabbit Run, Southern Hills in Hastings, and West Wind in Ogallala this year; all four of these are great new courses.  We again plan to end the season at Valentine & Ainsworth.  These will be two separate tournaments on consecutive days, with some special room arrangements & casino “freebee’s” for those interested.  The two day Treadway Memorial tournament will be at Lakeside CC.  The Treadway is our only individual tournament, and will again be flighted into age divisions, with Gross & Net winners.  Your association is again contributing $360 in added flag prizes, plus a registration sleeve of golf balls for this event.
