The Night Child series tells of the early life of James Ailing. He and his brother witnessed their father's death in the fangs of a wolf shortly before they were supposed to make a trip to the United States to settle near New York City. After their father's death the decision was made to move even though he was no longer with them. They moved to the small farm their father had already purchased for the family to live upon. The family tried to return to a "normal" life. James and his brother began attending school, and the entire family went to church every Sunday. That is where they met Father Riley, who quickly became a family friend, and a mentor to James and Chad. He is the first one to notice that these two were different from anyone else he had ever met. Minor injuries heal overnight that should take a few days to fully disappear, but his belief that the brothers were unique was confirmed one day when James sustained an injury that should have resulted in death. Instead, James fully recovered within minutes of the sun setting. Father Riley soon finds out from the Vatican that James and Chad are the successful result of centuries of planning on the part of the Catholic Church. The Church wants them to act as a line of defense against the evils that most people believe to be myths. Along the way, James shares his gift with his girlfriend Anna, and the Church begins helping to train these young heroes in the use of their abilities to ensure they are successful in their struggle against the things that go bump in the night.
