 An increasing number of people are experiencing a modern new use of this traditional medicine -- which is the use of acupuncture for cosmetic reasons. Called "cosmetic acupuncture" or "facial rejuvenation acupuncture" or even "acupuncture facelifts" -- it is the application of local (i.e., facial) acupuncture needles to stimulate the muscles to cease drooping and the body to create more collagen, thus smoothing wrinkles. The acupuncture session is usually combined with a form of facial gua sha -- similar to a spa-like treatment. Generally, most patients report seeing a difference in their appearance after 5-10 treatments -- although, as in every other case with this specialized medicine -- this differs from case to case. Please note that as with every acupuncture treatment, there is a possibility of temporary bleeding or bruising -- which can be more noticeable on the face.
