The Clifton Public Library received more than fifteen awesome books on American history and culture for the 2010 We the People Bookshelf program. These books range from picture books through titles geared for high schoolers or adults. To celebrate these books, as well as the many years of past We the People titles, the library is running an all ages program called, “We the Readers.” Here’s how it works: check-out and read any three WtP titles and you will be awarded a Declaration of Reading, which will be on display at the library. Your picture and the titles of the three books you read will appear on your Declaration of Reading. That’s it. There is no sign up. There are no fees or parent signatures. We’ve even done the leg work of getting the books together so you don’t have to sort through the shelves. On the reverse of this newsletter is a chart showing the last four years’ WtP books. (We actually have a couple more years of WtP titles, but the list was getting too small to read!) The titles are grouped by grade level. For students who are gearing up for classroom reading, many of these titles have Accelerated Reader quizzes. The We the People Bookshelf Grant program is administered by the National Endowment for the Humanities in collaboration with the American Library Association. Each year a different theme highlights important aspects of our American heritage. Reading any of these books will provide valuable connections for readers about America.
