We the Readers

posted Aug 27, 2010 3:06 PM by Andrew Winkel

The Clifton Public Library received more than fifteen awesome books on American history and culture for the 2010 We the People Bookshelf program. These books range from picture books through titles geared for high schoolers or adults. To celebrate these books, as well as the many years of past We the People titles, the library is running an all ages program called, “We the Readers.”

Here’s how it works: check-out and read any three WtP titles and you will be awarded a Declaration of Reading, which will be on display at the library. Your picture and the titles of the three books you read will appear on your Declaration of Reading.

That’s it. There is no sign up. There are no fees or parent signatures. We’ve even done the leg work of getting the books together so you don’t have to sort through the shelves.

On the reverse of this newsletter is a chart showing the last four years’ WtP books. (We actually have a couple more years of WtP titles, but the list was getting too small to read!) The titles are grouped by grade level. For students who are gearing up for classroom reading, many of these titles have Accelerated Reader quizzes.

The We the People Bookshelf Grant program is administered by the National Endowment for the Humanities in collaboration with the American Library Association. Each year a different theme highlights important aspects of our American heritage.

Reading any of these books will provide valuable connections for readers about America.

Our February program for kids will be a double treat. First, we will be honoring the 200 anniversary of President Lincoln's birth with our craft. Second, we will be unveiling all 70 of our brand new children's books received from the Libri grant. We specifically looked for titles that filled gaps in our collection, acquiring some classic titles that kids are sure to love to read again and again.
The fun begins at the library at 6:00 P.M., and includes stories, craft, and a snack. Register at the library by Friday, February 13th. Cost is still only $1.00 for each participant. Suitable for grades K-5.

Full House for Halloween Program

posted Oct 22, 2008 3:11 PM by Andrew Winkel

The heroes trumped all on Tuesday, October 21st, as 16 children participated in the Halloween program. With two Super Girls, Spider-man, two Power Rangers, and Bumblebee (the Transformer), Princess Ariel and the library staff were safe from the likes of the green skeleton, the vicious pirate girl, and the friendly spider.
Children created scary wind socks and listened to Carolyn Crimi's Boris and Bella and Dav Pilkey's Hallo-wIener.
What will next month bring? Probably not nearly the assortment of heroes and heroines, but definitely fun.
Expect pictures soon.
