How to create the Cleantech Society ?                                      The empathic civilisation model by Rifkin

Why IT Google and Cisco Will Soon Manage Your Energy Use

CO2 reduction from IT sector 8 Gigatons 2020

The GeSI report estimates that the entire IT sector could reduce approximately 7.8 gigatons of CO2 of emissions savings by 2020 or about 15 percent of emissions project by 2020.

The It sector overcomes the problems of Classic conservative Power companies

having difficulties with modern Interconnection like Smart grids

Google and Cisco focused on Smart grid and Smart buildings

So, the IT sector has a significant role to play in reducing energy use and carbon emissions, presenting an enormous business opportunity. Companies such as Google, Cisco and others are now focused on smart   grid and smart buildings; your home and your office. Smart grid and smart buildings refer to the ability to monitor energy use and adjust based upon real time data, a two way exchange of energy information. For now, Google is focused on home energy management and Cisco on commercial energy management.

However, considering the blurring of market boundaries, this may separation may change over time.

The new energy management products

The two most interesting developments currently are from Google and Cisco (full disclosure, Cisco is a client of DOMANI). Google has essentially bypassed the need for a smart meter by partnering with Energy Inc. to provide a home energy meter, which works with Google's energy management software. The Google PowerMeter and Energy Inc.'s TED 5000 (The Energy Detective) monitor energy use from a web browser or smart phone. The information from the system includes real time energy use and approximate cost, trends and comparisons to previous use.

Clean power from Sahara for Europe

Nov-1-2009 Munich Germany
$400bn plan to provide Europe with solar power from the Sahara
moved a step closer to reality today with the formation of a
consortium of 12 companies to carry out the work.

15% Clean Sahara electricity for Europe 2050
The Desertec Industrial Initiative (DII) aims to provide 15% of Europe's
electricity by 2050 or earlier via power lines stretching across the
desert and Mediterranean sea.

The German-led consortium was brought together by Munich Re, the world's
biggest reinsurer, and consists of some of country's biggest engineering
and power companies, including Siemens, E.ON, ABB and Deutsche Bank.

It now believes the DII can deliver solar power to Europe as early as 2015.

California first Smart Grid bill U.S.

California quietly passes first statewide Smart Grid law

Gov Schwarzenegger signed
Largely ignored by the national media, California passed the first statewide Smart Grid bill in  the U.S. earlier this month, amid the flurry of renewable energy and efficiency legislation Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger also signed.

California First State to Sign Smart Grid Legislation SB17 into Law.....energy economy

With SB 17 in place, a 21st century grid could be realized in California within the next five to ten years,
allowing for a fundamental change in the way we think about, and use, electricity. It would also help
jump start a new energy economy, creating green technologies and green collar jobs.

Masdar City starts $11bn geothermal AC cooling

Cleantech Society Masdar City / Abu Dhabi

O      5 MW Airconditon geothermal
O   500 MW Solar thermal power
O   100 MW Solar PV power

Geothermal airconditoning

Construction starts on Nov-1-2009,
by Reyjkavik Geothermal. The Icelandic company has been handed a $1.6 million contract to export its geothermal
know-how to energy-hungry Masdar City.

Geothermal airconditon, how it works:
When complete, the geothermal project will be used to power Masdar City's five megawatt air conditioning system. Water circulated in the geothermal wells will generate steam that turns turbines, all in an attempt to give a welcome burst of cold air to residents of the desert oasis. The geothermal project is only a small part of Masdar City's sustainable plans. The cleantech center will also feature a 500 megawatt solar thermal plant, a 100 megawatt solar array, and a number of green energy companies.
