Welcome to our classroom kitchen project where our 3rd grade class is working towards opening our very own restaurants! Throughout our site you will find the steps it took our students to open up their very own restaurants. We began our research by connecting our students with pen pals in Japan. The students got the opportunity to compare and contrast foods and restaurants in their hometowns. From there our students explored a variety of topics including health and nutrition, family reciepes, other culture's food, as well as all the planning stages of designing and opening a resaurant. Using project-based learning and technology throughout the entire unit, our students got to experience first hand in collaboration with classmates and hands on activities.
A
n important aspect of our unit plan is to introduce students to a variety of technology using this inquiry based approach. Throughout the unit, students will get exposure to using Audacity, Microsoft Word, Excell, and Publisher, YouTube, google maps (as well as a variety of other google applications), Inspiration, and Movie Maker. This wide range of technology integration allows students experience working with technology developing appropirate benchmarks and standards as described by the cirriculumn.
On this site you will find a very wide range of lesson plans and topics that we used to guide our classrooms through this unit working up to our Opening Day Celebration. Depending on grade level of your classroom and ability of your students, lesson plans can be changed or modified to better suit your needs. Keep in mind while inquiry based classrooms are designed to function off of open ended questions that all lesson plans and activities should be grounded in the state standards.
Below is the inspiration map that was created by our students outlining the different aspects of the planning stages to open a restaurant:
Throughout this project, we kept a blog between teachers to help improve our collaboration by sharing ideas, lesson plans, and other aspects of design. A blog is a great way to improve communication throughout the classroom and can be benefical for student use! Check out our blog: Classroom Restaurant.
In any project done in the classroom, it is important to make sure lesson plans and activities align with current state standards. For the purpose of this project, we used a variety of benchmarks from different grades and content areas. Please see the side bar to see the Standards used in our project.
