In Chapter Nine, we learn of the nuclear testing that takes place in the South Pacific waters.   Ihimaera writes, "Two weeks earlier the herd had been feeding in the Tuamotu Archipelago when suddenly a flash of bright light had scalded the sea, and giant tidal sound waves had exerted so much pressure that internal ear canals had bled.  Seven young calves had died" (Ihimaera, p.57-58).

At this leg of our journey, we will be investigating some of the ways that humans have a negative impact on their environment.  Use the information you learn to write a persuasive essay with a possible solution.  For example, using the scenario above, you could write a letter to the United Nations asking that they force countries to stop nuclear testing.  Your essay could also be geared to a local audience.  You could write the mayor of your city (or newspaper editorial section) and request a city-wide recycling program.

Be creative and persuasive!  Our essays will be published in the right-hand column, so pay attention to spelling and grammar!

Links to our letters will be uploaded here upon completion.  Each child will have his or her own "webpage" to publish the letter.

Here is an example.

Students will be exposed to environmental, cultural, and digital literacy.

  • Environmental:  students must understand the fundamental connections between our modern world and the natural world.
  • Cultural: students must recognize the goals and values of the culture of the audience in order to effectively persuade.
  • Digital:  students must be able to create and edit a webpage that accurately portrays their ideas and work.
