Run Alan Run!

September 9, 2009

Dear Fellow Citizens,

We woke up this morning to an incredible surprise in the morning paper.   Alan Khazei, co-founder of City Year and founder of Be The Change, Inc, and a leading social entrepreneur and public servant is considering running for Ted Kennedy's senate seat.  He is the exact kind of leader we need.

In the Boston Globe today he said "I've been humbled and overwhelmed by people reaching out to me and encouraging me to think very seriously about it."

We are those people.   If you are too, sign our online petition below so that we can show Alan that he has the support he needs to get in the race.

Our message to Alan is simple: Run Alan Run!

Sincerely,

Citizens for Alan

“Senate Race Taking Twists”

“Amid the jockeying, a new name emerged from outside the sphere of politics: Alan Khazei, the 48-year-old cofounder of City Year, the nationwide community service program for young adults, said he was seriously considering jumping into the Democratic primary.

… [Khazei] would have access to liberal donors, the ability to deploy an army of young campaign activists, and the possibility of claiming the Kennedy mantle of public service.

“I’ve been humbled and overwhelmed by people reaching out to me and encouraging me to think very seriously about it,’’ Khazei said. “Because I can see the tremendous difference a senator can make.’’

Khazei, who lives in Brookline with his wife and two children, said he still had to “work it over with my family,’’ but that he was inspired by the long service and progressive record of Kennedy, with whom he worked on a national service bill that now bears the late senator’s name.

“My life has been about public service,’’ he said. “I have to look at this seriously.’’

Takeaway:

Massachusetts has got civic-minded, policy-minded people outside the elected-office circuit,” who could be major candidates in the upcoming Senate race. It’s easy to count a guy like Khazei out, because he’s not a household name, “But I wouldn't be so sure. I think he could potentially be a significant factor, and he certainly would stand out from the career pols. Keep an eye on him…”
