Exploring Civic Virtue Through Education
About this documentary
Civic virtue is a commitment to democratic principles
and values that manifests itself in the everyday lives of citizens in
the United States.
"Exploring
Civic Virtue through Education" investigates how six secondary social studies
teachers emphasize the importance of becoming active citizens. While these
teachers use a variety of activities and assignments to stress the importance
of civic virtue, all six of them agree
that participation is the key to a successful democratic society
The teachers interviewed include Melissa Glover (5 years teaching) from Farragut High School in Knoxville, TN, and six teachers from Concord High School in Concord, North Carolina: Marie May (6 years), Robert Allensworth
(1 year), Cindy Pressley (18 years), Matt Sides (2 years),
and Karen Mitchell (9 years).
About the creator, Jessica Mitchell
In
an age of accountability under the current No Child Left Behind Policy,
where Math and Science are placed at the forefront of our educational
system and growth is measured in numbers, I feel that Thomas Jefferson’s
vision of education has been overlooked. To produce, “an educated
citizenry essential to democracy,” our schools must cultivate an atmosphere
where students learn, practice, and develop skills to become effective
participants in American democracy.
