The ICIT international conference on Information Technology started in 1998, after a  national conference on the topic was held in Bhubaneswar, India in 1997 under the leadership of Prof. Hrushikesha Mohanty.

Since then the conference has been held annually. The conference is supported by the Orissa Information Technology Society (OITS) and IEEE.

The upcoming ICIT 2009 will be held in Bhubaneswar and its general chairs are Prof. Pritimoy Bhattacharya (formerly of IIT Kharagpur) and Prof. Gautam Das (University of Texas at Arlington) and its program chairs are Prof. Arindama Singh (IIT Madras) and Prof. Brajendra Panda (University of Arkansas).
