What We Believe

The Mission of Hilo Coast United Church of Christ

is to call all people to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ,

 especially in the Hilo-Hamakua coastal area,

for the purpose of sharing our lives together as believers

through acts of mutual support

and growth in our Christian faith,

and for the purpose of reaching out to all people through acts of

Christian service motivated by the love of Jesus Christ.

This then is our mission:

To keep Christ at the center of all we do;

To be committed to each other;

To care for those who are hurting.

Hilo Coast United Church of Christ . . .

  • Acknowledges as its sole Head, Jesus Christ, Son of God and Savior.

  • It acknowledges as kindred in Christ all who share in this confession.

  • It looks to the Word of God in the Scriptures, and to the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, to prosper its creative and redemptive work in the world.

  • In accordance with the teaching of our Lord and the practice prevailing among evangelical Christians, it recognizes two sacraments:  Baptism and the Lord's Supper or Holy Communion.

  • Members have the right to interpret, understand, and follow the Word of God according to the dictates of their own consciences.

  • We celebrate and give thanks for the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ:  that God's unconditional love is offered to every person and therefore God's expectation of justice for all is every Christian's responsibility.

  • Belief in a specific creed or statement of faith shall never be required as a test of fellowship or membership in the congregation.

(From Article IV of the Bylaws of the Congregation of Hilo Coast United Church of Christ)

Our purpose is . . .

To follow the Great
Commandment to "love one another"

and to follow the Great Commission to "make disciples"

by proclaiming the Gospel, worshiping God, and serving the least of these through ministries of service.

(From Article II of the Bylaws of the Congregation of Hilo Coast United Church of Christ)
