The Princeton UIL Speech & Debate Tournament on October 3, 2009 was our most successful yet, and with only half the Team in attendance! CONGRATULATIONS to Sarah Beth, Molly & Jessica for advancing to SEMI FINALS in Prose, and to Pranav
(12th place NLD Debate)!! 
And to our MEDAL WINNERSNick (5th place Persuasive Speaking), Tonee (5th place Congress), Nick & "Skipper" (4th place Public Forum Debate), Mollie (2nd place Congress), Bazar (2nd place Poetry) and Taylor & Bazar for taking 1st place in Duo Interpretation!  GO TEAM!

 September News

 

SEPTEMBER 25-26 - The last September tournament at Newman Smith brought more awards!  Congrats to Schwartz (finalist in novice extemp), Cameron & Chris (finalists in Duo Interp), and Nick scored a bobble head for 3rd place LD Debate Speaker!

 

 

SEPTEMBER 16 - Congressional Debate Practice Session for Frisco teams.  Thanks a bunch to Liberty, Frisco & Heritage speech & debate team members for participating in debating the issues with us!

 

Next up was the Southlake Carroll Tournament, now known as the "Just Out of Reach" tournament (after Hurricane Ike interfered last year, and this year- a day of pouring rain & an undefeated PFD team who did not advance to quarters) - September 12, 2009.  CONGRATULATIONS to James & Bazar, who brought home 2nd place silver platters in Duet Acting, earning 6 TFA State points.  Way to beat the curse! 

 

The CHS Speech & Debate Team headed to our first tournament at Plano Sr. High - September 5, 2009.  CONGRATULATIONS to Nick, advancing to double octos in VLD Debate, and to our FIRST EVER PSHS AWARD WINNERS, Eric & Josh who brought home 2nd place in Public Forum Debate, earning 6 of the 10 points they will need to qualify for TFA State in March. 
Great job guys!

August 3rd-6th

~B~ headed to Ripon, WI for NFL Conference 

Actress Shelley Long was National Oratory Champion in the 60s- you'll be surprised to see what

her topic was for that time period!

 

July 20-24 - SUMMER PREP CLINIC 1

 

Thanks to James, Bazar, Cameron, David, Molly, Ralph, Nick, & Hansen (and even Alex & Olivia!) for attending our first Summer Tournament Prep Clinic.  We got so much accomplished!  We have 3 Duos/Duets, several H.I.s and even a Poetry piece chosen and ready to hit the September tournaments. 

See you again at the Speech prep clinic beginning August 10th!

  

June 30 - Field Trip to the Bookstore

We had a fairly productive afternoon, setting goals for the Clinics and for the new tournament season, cut scripts & checked into a few books.  Thanks to David, Josh, Eric, Nick, Ralph, James, Bazar & Chris for coming out today!

  Course Descriptions:

 Communication Applications: Communication Applications is a state mandated course needed for graduation. It teaches skills for job interviews, presentation, and public speaking skills in used in both business and personal life.  SYLLABUS

 

ORAL INTERPRETATION: Oral Interpretation is an acting and communication class focusing on drama, prose, poetry, oratory and life-long communication tools. People in this class can be selected to represent CHS on the speech team. The class teaches analysis of literature, research, organization, creation of characters, critical thinking and interpersonal skills through the venues of oratory, dramatic interpretation, humorous interpretation, duet acting and other performance oriented venues.  Syllabus

 

DEBATE: Debate is a competition speech class. People in this class can be selected to represent CHS on the speech team. The class teaches skills for argumentation, research, critical thinking and current events. Students participate and learn about extemporaneous speaking, debate and student congress.  Syllabus
