Welcome to my capstone portfolio. This site will showcase the course work I have completed for the School of LIbrary and Information Management degree at Emporia State University. In addition to a Masters in Library Science, I also completed the course work and will be a certified School Library Media Specialist.
I am currently in my 9th year working in education. After graduating from Tabor College in 2000 I began teaching 8th grade Integrated Computer Studies in Derby, Kansas. I had a friend who was, at the time, getting his MLS and found myself interested in the program. After 6 years of teaching I decided to begin the program. While I enjoyed working with students and being in the classroom, I was offered an opportunity to take a library position as I entered library school.
I am currently in my third year working as a middle school librarian in Wichita, KS. One reason I decided to attend ESU was because I wanted a Masters degree in Library Science in addition to a school library certificate. I also wanted a degree that would allow me to work in a variety of libraries if I would ever decide to get out of the school setting. I currently enjoy working in a middle school library but I am open to working in another field of library work in the future. The school where I am employed is very diverse, one reason I enjoy it. It has been challenging to find materials for my students that are quality materials while also reflecting their culture and ethnicity. Being able to put these types of materials in their hands is rewarding not only for them, but me as well.
The most important thngs I have learned during my time at SLIM are how a school librarian can make a difference for students and teachers. It has been obvious that the library profession has changed dramatically over the last 10 years. Having worked in a school where the library was used mostly as a meeting place, I have been amazed at being introduced to the idea that librarians have state standards and the importance of supporting the classroom curriculum. My education at SLIM has been very important as I have been molded for my job while I have been taking classes. I look forward to many years in the school library, meeting the many needs of my students and the teachers.
