A Holy Saturday reflection has been posted for you on our blog.
It begins: "Waiting. The experience can be dull, especially when we're supposed to keep watch for something (or someone). It can be full of anticipation, like the moments before a wedding. It can be agonizing when we're in pain, longing for relief. It can be almost unbearable when we are awaiting death. When awaiting resurrection, it is beyond words."
Happy Easter!

Praying the Truth by William Barry, SJReview by Stephen Fahrig, OMV
Excerpt of review:
"O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely. Your eyes saw all my actions, they were all of them written in your book; Every one of my days was decreed before one of them came into being." (Psalm 139:1,4,16) These verses from Psalm 139 - considered by some to be among the most beautiful and incisive psalms in the entire Psalter - remind us of the powerful truth that God knows us inside and out, totally and completely. He who dwells in eternity has known every thought we will ever think, every word we will ever speak, and every deed we will ever do before we think, say or do any of them. In short, God knows everything about us - our strengths and our weaknesses, our virtues and our vices. Even at our lowest and most sinful moments, we can take heart in knowing that God saw us at our worst, and still chose to love us and bring us into being. Aware of this knowledge, how can we be anything but honest when we draw near to God in prayer?
Review by C.H. Pak
Excerpt:
Rossetti begins this little volume by telling us what a mystic is: "By 'mystic' I do not mean someone who necessarily has extraordinary supernatural experience, although these sometimes do occur. Nor am I speaking of those who claim to possess a hidden knowledge of a secret spiritual realm. Rather, Christian mystics are those who live the Christian life 'with the gloves off.' These men and women experience directly and powerfully the dynamic and overwhelming Truth. And they can say without hesitation, as did the prophet Amos, that the Lion has roared."

Check out our reflection re: gum-chewing at Mass on our blog.
Excerpt:
Every once in a while the faithful will see something going on at Mass that probably shouldn't be happening and they come asking questions because they're confused. To the weekly or daily communicant such questions may appear bizarre (presumably we've been solidly formed in our traditions), yet we are obliged anyway to answer clearly, kindly, and unambiguously when asked. One such question is whether gum-chewing is permissible during Mass and when receiving communion. |

"Frequently highlighting the "shock factor" of Jesus' parables, Fr. Thomas Keating seeks to transform the reader's understanding of them by jarring them in the same way that the average Jewish hearer would have been jarred in Jesus' time. Keating's contribution here is the Jewish historical context of the parables. He takes those two lines and then brings them forward into everyday life, bringing with it the relevant historical context." Read more here. |

Next weekend, the movie The Rite will be in theaters here in the US. Loosely based on the experiences of Fr. Gary Thomas, pastor at Sacred Heart parish in Saratoga, CA and exorcist in his diocese, the film raises questions about evil, demonic activity, and possession. I recently read the book Interview with an Exorcist and decided to post a review of it for those wanting to understand more about it. Read the review here. |
