Pat Barta
In Memoriam
On
June 1st, about 11 a.m., our friend and sister in faith, Pat Barta died
while at home and in hospice care. Bill was with her as she departed
this earthly life. We will miss our friend and her love, laughter and
her many talents! Pat showed immense courage during her fight with
cancer and she taught us how to confront illness and death with dignity
and faith.
A celebration of Pat's life will take place at Christ Congregation on
Saturday, June 18 at 11 a.m. It is to be called "Pat's Celebration!" And
that's what we'll do --- we'll gather together and give thanks for the
life of Pat Barta.

Psalm 23 for Busy People
The Lord is my Pace Setter, I shall not rush,
He makes me stop and rest for quiet intervals,
He provides me with images of stillness,
Which restore my serenity.
He leads me in ways of efficiency,
through calmness of mind; and his guidance is peace.
Even though I have a great many things to accomplish each day,
I will not fret, for his presence is here.
His timelessness, his all-importance will keep me in balance.
He prepares refreshment and renewal in the midst of my activity,
by anointing my head with his oils of tranquility,
My cup of joyous energy overflows.
Surely harmony and effectiveness shall be the fruit of my hours,
For I shall walk in the pace of my Lord,
and dwell in his house for ever.

"The Servant-Girl at Emmaus (After a Painting by Velázquez)"
by Denise Levertov
She listens, listens, holding
her breath. Surely that voice
is his—the one
who had looked at her, once, across the crowd,
as no one ever had looked?
Had seen her? Had spoken as if to her?
Surely those hands were his,
taking the platter of bread from hers just now?
Hands he'd laid on the dying and made them well?
Surely that face—?
The man they'd crucified for sedition and blasphemy.
The man whose body disappeared from its tomb.
The man it was rumored now some women had seen this morning, alive?
Those who had brought this stranger home to their table
don't recognize yet with whom they sit.
But she in the kitchen, absently touching the winejug she's to take in,
a young Black servant intently listening,
swings round and sees
the light around him
and is sure.

A poem shared after thinking how ordinary acts can sometimes be our most courageous.
XI.
by Wendell Berry
Though he was ill and in pain,
in disobedience to the instruction he
would have received if he had asked,
the old man got up from his bed,
dressed, and went to the barn.
The bare branches of winter had emerged
through the last leaf-colors of fall,
the loveliest of all, browns and yellows
delicate and nameless in the gray light
and the sifting rain. He put feed
in the troughs for eighteen ewe lambs,
sent the dog for them, and she
brought them. They came eager
to their feed, and he who felt
their hunger was by their feeding
eased. From no place in the time
of present places, within no boundary
nameable in human thought,
they had gathered once again,
the shepherd, his sheep, and his dog
with all the known and the unknown
round about to the heavens' limit.
Was this his stubbornness or bravado?
No. Only an ordinary act
of profoundest intimacy in a day
that might have been better. Still
the world persisted in its beauty,
he in his gratitude, and for this
he had most earnestly prayed.
"XI." by Wendell Berry, from Leavings. © Centerpoint, 2010.

Seven Stanzas at Easter
John Updike
Make no mistake: if He rose at all
it was as His body;
if the cells’ dissolution did not reverse, the molecules
reknit, the amino acids rekindle,
the Church will fall.
It was not as the flowers,
each soft Spring recurrent;
it was not as His Spirit in the mouths and fuddled
eyes of the eleven apostles;
it was as His flesh: ours.
The same hinged thumbs and toes,
the same valved heart
that–pierced–died, withered, paused, and then
regathered out of enduring Might
new strength to enclose.
Let us not mock God with metaphor,
analogy, sidestepping, transcendence;
making of the event a parable, a sign painted in the
faded credulity of earlier ages:
let us walk through the door.
The stone is rolled back, not papier-mâché,
not a stone in a story,
but the vast rock of materiality that in the slow
grinding of time will eclipse for each of us
the wide light of day.
And if we will have an angel at the tomb,
make it a real angel,
weighty with Max Planck’s quanta, vivid with hair,
opaque in the dawn light, robed in real linen
spun on a definite loom.
Let us not seek to make it less monstrous,
for our own convenience, our own sense of beauty,
lest, awakened in one unthinkable hour, we are
embarrassed by the miracle,
and crushed by remonstrance.

A poem for Palm Sunday from a different perspective: The Donkey G. K. Chesterton
When fishes flew and forests walked And figs grew upon thorn, Some moment when the moon was blood Then surely I was born.
With monstrous head and sickening cry And ears like errant wings, The devil's walking parody On all four-footed things.
The tattered outlaw of the earth, Of ancient crooked will; Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb, I keep my secret still. Fools! For I also had my hour; One far fierce hour and sweet: There was a shout about my ears, And palms before my feet.

Praying
It doesn't have to be
the blue iris, it could be
weeds in a vacant lot, or a few
small stones; just
pay attention, then patch
a few words together and don't try
to make them elaborate, this isn't
a contest but the doorway
into thanks, and a silence in which
another voice may speak.

AN UPDATE FROM LiERIN IN NICARAGUA:
LiErin writes: “ Hi, Jeff
Nice timing - we have electricity sporadically, but this morning both the power and the internet are working well.
Things are going well so far. There have been some disappointing
surprises - families that have moved away or broken up. Many workers on
the farm have been fired during this, the "silent season" between
planting and harvest. I'm starting to realize what it means to be
working with a migrant community. But other programs are flourishing.
There are 27 women involved in microcredit loans, and all have paid back
their loans on time each month so far (we're close to the end of the
cycle - most women have only one payment left). In one of the two
communities we are working in, they have gotten electricity and a road
for the first time! Just two weeks ago, an ambulance (a pickup truck)
was able to get all the way up the mountain to collect a woman in
labor. She was able to get to the city hospital in time, which was a
great thing, because there were complications with her labor and her
newborn is still in the hospital there two weeks later (very unusual
here).
The big, exciting news is that they've gotten a high school in Santa
Emilia. Two years ago, very few students could go to high school,
because they had to travel far away and/or pay for private education.
Last year, 67 students received scholarships to go to schools outside
the community. This year, 8 teachers have been hired and 209 students
are going to school! Right now, half the teachers are paid for by a US
congregation, and half by the government. After hearing about the needs
here, the team leader and I agreed that funds for the high school are
the most critical, urgent need, so the cash donations Christ
Congregation sent will go to supporting the school.
And, just for laughs, I've attached a picture of what I've been up to the past week.”
PRINCETON THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY BOOK SALE:
Princeton Theological Seminary will hold its annual used book sale in
the Seminary‘s Whiteley Gymnasium from Thursday, April 7 through
Saturday, April 9.
Why We Do It: The PTS Stewardship and Missions Committee‘s annual used
book sale is organized and run by PTS students to help other seminary
students in developing nations broaden their theological education. Our
hope is to raise financial support and awareness for international
seminary libraries in need. All proceeds from the book sale will benefit
theological seminaries around the world. These gifts allow our
colleagues around the world to build richer library collections in their
own languages.
For more information about the sale, donating books, directions, or
assistance with unloading large book donations, please contact Ross Lang
at ptsbooksale@gmail.com.

LiERIN'S NEW TEACHING OPPORTUNITY: LiErin writes: It's a 3-week
January-term class on "The Practice and Problems of Short Term Missions"
at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, VA. My class is about 13
students, going for the MDiv or an MACE - Masters in Christian Ed. So
it will be exciting to be talking to people who will be thinking about
how to put the ideas we discuss into practice in their own local (and
global!) contexts. I will also be spending a weekend in January at the
Louisville Institute in KY. I have a grant from them, and I'll get to
hear from the other pastors and scholars who've been doing work on
American Religious Life this year through the Institute. Should be an
exciting weekend!
We have received lots of pictures of Emmalene and baby Elias Leopold

A Christmas Candle
A Christmas candle is a lovely thing;
It makes no noise at all,
But softly gives itself away;
While quite unselfish, it grows small.

SEMINARIAN, BRIAN WARFIELD, walked in last week’s CROP Walk. Donations
can be contributed during the next six weeks. Brian wrote the following
about his experience:
“After the service, I missed the church-wide meeting in order to attend
the CROP walk with my family. While it was not very enjoyable physically
(walking 5 miles without any practice rarely is), there was something
to be gained spiritually and pastorally. I only wish that I had spent
more of the time thinking about "spiritual" things rather than when the
walk would end. Even so, it was an encouraging experience to see various
Christian and Jewish congregations interacting with one another and
participating in an activity that seeks to help the people the Hebrew
Prophets and Christ were most concerned about. As I overheard some
teenage girls discussing the overall value of the walk, I felt compelled
to agree with the girl who said, "What's the point of walking? It's not
like walking is going to end hunger." Right she was. But as I continued
to think about why we were walking, I came to the conclusion that we
were walking for three different types of people: ourselves, other
individuals at the park, and the hungry. We walk for ourselves so that
charity does not become a disinterested, impersonal activity where I can
donate money online and never move my feet an inch in the direction of
the poor and hungry. We need to be changed; we need to be engaged. So we
walk. We also walk so those passing by will see that there is a
brotherhood among all of God's children and that these timeless
principles of caring for the needy are so great and so vital that we
must join together in practicing them. Finally, and most importantly, we
walk for the hungry so that their cause is taken up by people who will
do more than write a check and go on about their lives. By walking, we
give our friends and family some face to keep in their minds as they
think about the reality of millions of people suffering from
malnourishment.”

IN SECOND HOUR THIS WEEK: Yosi Weldemedhir, a graduate student at the Woodrow
Wilson School of Princeton University, recently returned from a year in
Tunisia. In second hour, she will start with a general introduction of the country, population,
culture, religion, and a short history of its colonial past. Yosi writes: “I
will be discussing my experiences in this country of contradictions - Tunisia's
abundant beaches make it a haven for bikini-clad tourists although it is still
a place of traditions and one where a woman's value is judged by her
'marriage-ability'. I will be discussing my life in the past year and also
provide a glimpse into the lives of my Tunisian friends, a wonderful group of
people I have come to love. I intend to touch upon their religious, social and
political lives to provide a better idea of what life is really like for the
citizens.”

fourteen Sundays. Each volunteer would need to commit to just two weeks

September 21st is the annual
International Day of Prayer for Peace, sponsored by the World Council of
Church’s and coinciding with the UN’s International Day of Peace. The
International Day of Prayer for Peace offers an opportunity for church
communities around the world to pray and act together to nurture a just
peace in the hearts of people, their families, communities and
societies. The idea was proposed in 2004 during a meeting between WCC
general secretary Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia and UN Secretary General Kofi
Annan. The focus for this year is Africa and theme is "Work and Pray in Hope for Peace.”
Pray for Peace- Take a moment to pray for peace on September 21st or dedicate a worship service to peace in your community.
Work for Peace-
Take action by contacting your Senator to ask him/her to ratify the New
START Treaty to ensure U.S. security and take a step toward further
nuclear disarmament.

Dearest Father in Heaven,
Bless this child and bless this day

Teach this child to follow in your footsteps,
And to live life in the ways of
Love, faith, hope and charity.

FIFTH
SUNDAY HYMN SING: As is now our custom at CC, we try to have an
alternative worship format on fifth Sundays. On August 29, we're having a
hymn sing --- so come prepared to sing some of your favorite oldies.
Scroll down and you’ll find a list of songs and hymns. Think about your
favorites. On Sunday, during worship, you’ll have an opportunity to
request one (or more) of your favorites — and, we’d like you to tell us
why the song has special meaning for you.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE HODGES Family on the birth of Autumn, born August 25.
OUTREACH MINISTRY OFFERING: The OMO for July and August will go to the
establishment of a Social Action discretionary fund. The past few years,
natural disasters, sudden human-caused catastrophes, and a number of
more localized emergencies have occurred and demanded our attention. The
Social Action Committee would like to build a fund that allows Christ
Congregation to respond to these occurrences. Of course, the BP oil
spill is on our minds this year, and we will likely look into partnering
with organizations we have worked with in the past to help address the
needs as they continue to arise.
