Relevant Research: Link Between ADHD and Propensity for Crime

Researchers at the Yale School of Public Health reported in the September edition of the Journal of Mental Health Policy and Economics that children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are more likely to engage in criminal behavior as adults. The study of 10,000 young adults found those with ADHD had a propensity for participation in crimes such as burglary, theft and drug dealing. The study concluded that the targeting of and evaluation of intervention programs could be a wise investment. JMHPE Abstract

WWC Releases New Practice Guide: Helping Students Navigate the Path to College

The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) invites you to look at our newest practice guide, Helping Students Navigate the Path to College: What High Schools Can Do.

This guide recommends five specific steps that educators, administrators and policy makers can take, beginning in 9th grade, to increase access to higher education. Implementation challenges and potential solutions for circumventing the roadblocks are also described, as well as the research evidence that supports these recommendations.

The guide targets high schools and school districts, and focuses on effective practices that prepare students academically for college, assist them in completing the steps to college entry, and improve their likelihood of enrolling in college.

"Meaningful Education: What Key Values Will Shape the Social and Moral Aims of Education in the Next Two Decades?" Thursday 25th to Saturday 27th March 2010

York St John University

I am very enthused about an upcoming conference co-sponsored by York St John University, the University of Hull, the Hong Kong Institute of Education and SPU. Started many years back by Professor Arthur Ellis, this small and community building conference has continued in various forms and venues, both locally and internationally. After our gathering at The Hong Kong Institute of Education a couple of years ago, this educational forum is shifting back to England. Many of our current education faculty participated in the conference held at the ancient and quaint city of Beverley, England.

In the past and for this conference, presenters will come from SPU, UK, Hong Kong, mainland China, and elsewhere. Obviously the conference focus is broad enough to encompass your educational field. Your presentation could address what is meaningful in reading, literacy, special, counselor, teacher education, etc.

Attached is the official announcement and call for papers. The cost is very reasonable because it includes conference fees, housing and meals, and a tourist outing. Right now flights on British Airlines are about $800 for this time period. Less expensive ones are available.

Please submit your 300 word presentation proposal to Professor Julian Stern, Dean of Education & Theology at York St John University by Oct 1, 2009.

For a view of York 360 degrees, go to http://www.york360.co.uk/

Please join me and some of your colleagues as we participate in a very meaning conference, and in the evening, walk on the ancient city walls as we tour this glorious locale.
If you have questions about the conference or need assistance with crafting a proposal please let me know.

Details are available in the attached brochure.
