 detail rêve 99 Through my work I search for the essence of woman, analyzing the relations between being a woman and the causes and affects of the myriad relationships that surround the feminine psyche. I search for myself. Fabrics, vintage clothes, found objects form the structure of my work; the use of traditional feminine techniques such as embroidery and crochet bind the whole together. I love textures, colors, articles of clothes on the verge of deterioration, giving them new life, a new story, some salvation; in doing so perhaps preserving some memory that has been fragmented or reinterpreting a former existence or relationship. Sifting through my collection of materials becomes a ritual of discovery. Once I have made choices, I begin working on the composition, arranging the fabrics and/or clothes, adding and discarding, cutting, layering, sculpting, stitching, pursuing the narative that speaks to me. The stitching is the lyrical element of my pieces and I am obsessed with them flowing in a harmonious fashion. I will stitch and pick them out over and over until harmony is achieved. I will put a piece away to rest before bringing it out again and working to conclusion; this process of creating is slow as the hands toil over the wealth of the imagination. In my recent works I have moved away from my usual format of a static, ridgid canvas; using drift wood, metal wire and grill and a three dimensional mode; the collages become even more fragmented, symbolic memories that have become caught, forever suspended in time. Totemistic secrets of some hidden past or place, they wait to be discovered. C'est l'essentiel de la femme que je cherche dans mon travail. Je cherche à analyser les relations entre l'existence féminine et les causes et les effets des rapports innombrables qui entourent la psyché féminine. En fait, c'est moi-même que je cherche. Les tissus, les vêtements antiques, les objets trouvés forment la structure de ma recherche: les techniques traditionnelles de la femme, telles la broderie et le travail au crochet, en font l'unité. Je donne une nouvelle vie à des vêtements presque détériores. Je retrouve dans une mémoire du temps perdu les traces d'un ancienne existence que j'analyse et réinterprète. La revue de ma collection de matériaux devient un rite de passage de découverte. Une fois mon tri effectué, je commence le travail de composition: j'ajoute, je jette à coté, je coupen, je range en couches, je sculpte; je pars à la recherche d'une histoire qui me parle. Les points font le lyrisme de mes oeuvres, je couds, je défais maintes et maintes fois afin d'arriver à l'harmonie: le processus de la création est lent car les mains modèlent les richesses de l'imagination. Dans mes derniers oeuvres je me suis écartée de mon ancienne présentation d'une toile statique et rigide. L'utilisation du bois flotté et un format à trois dimensions me permet de rentrer dans des mémoires symboliques qui flottent pour toujours suspendues dans le temps: des secrets totémiques d'un passé ou d'un endroit caché n'attendent plus que leur découverte. |
