I am Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. I hold a Ph.D. in philosophy from Stony Brook University, and studied at Bergische Universität Wuppertal, Germany. My dissertation is titled The Science of Right in Leibniz's Practical Philosophy, and I have articles published in The Review of Metaphysics and Studia Leibnitiana, and forthcoming in the British Journal for the History of Philosophy. I also hold an M.A. in English and a B.A. in Linguistics, from Ohio State University.

Beirut (and Lebanon) is a really interesting place. The philosophy department here is also really great. We are one of only a few universities in the Middle East offering an M.A. in philosophy. Last Spring, Daniel Dennett taught a course on the philosophy of Biology and Evolution. This spring, renowned Deleuze scholar Dan Smith is teaching a seminar on Deleuze. Here are some of my recent and upcoming activities:

  • Taught an upper-level course on Kant's practical philosophy (Fall 2011)
  • Teaching Environmental Ethics (Fall & Spring 2011-12).
  • Giving a paper at the Kant conference in Istanbul (May 23-26)
  • Giving a paper on Leibniz' deontic logic at the 3rd World-Congress on the Square of Opposition, right here in Beirut (June 26th - 30th).
  • On academic leave, Fall 2012.
  • Organizing an International Conference on Modern and Contemporary philosophy, to be held at AUB, May 16-18, 2013 Watch this space!

Beirut is also surprisingly safe, more so than many large American cities (and I've lived in Chicago and NYC).
In spite of the recent uprisings, Lebanon has remained surprisingly stable. Students from around the region are increasingly finding AUB a desirable place to study and not get shot. Check out this news clip here.
