Conducted by Trevor Jones To mark the Easter season, Choristry presents the story of Christ’s death and resurrection, as told by the Apostle Matthew. Heinrich Schütz’s magnificent and dramatic setting of the St Matthew Passion, while not as well known as Bach’s, is a gem of the early Baroque choral repertoire with its mix of Gregorian chant-like recitative and stirring, emotive crowd scenes combining to create a reflective and meditative choral experience. The work is performed entirely a capella, in line with Lenten traditions of the time which precluded instrumentation in church music. This was also the tradition for Passion settings in Dresden, where Schütz lived much of his life. The practice of adding non-Biblical texts as in Bach’s Passions had not yet developed. Schütz set this text in 1666 while in his eighties. He produced two other Passion settings at around the same age, a particularly uncommon feat in the 17th century.
