Personalised Scholarships – The Gift of Opportunity

Since we started here at CNYT (see our dedicated team here!), we have always believed that a little bit of thought and effort can go an incredibly long way.

Here are some of the hard facts:

  • There are 31879000 students in China
  • Education in big cities eats up a third of the family income (the Horizon Research Group, China daily) Rural families pay half of this but their income is much less so it is even steeper for them
  • College tuition is on average 5,000 yuan (about US$625) per year, well beyond the reach of most rural residents, whose average earning is about 3,200 yuan a year.

We offer two types of personalized scholarships:

Our Bursaries cater for students in primary, middle and high school and these aim to help improve the student’s educational experience through lightening their burden of living cost. Donations will start to take effect immediately.

Our Scholarships were developed to enable aspiring students to benefit from costly University education and helps to pay for books, accommodation fee, travel expenses and part of the tuition fee.

Timing:

IMPORTANT.  Sponsorship money can be received at any time during the year, but students must start school at the beginning of the academic year in September. If we receive your sponsorship form by July 1, we can select and notify the students before they go home to their rural villages for the summer. Otherwise, you must wait until autumn of the next year before hearing from your sponsored child.

If you’re still not convinced, we’ve set up two simple questions which we have found often make your decision clear:

  • Do I want to make a difference?
  • Am I willing to forego (only one required):

a)       Two glasses of wine a month (c.£5)

b)      One litre of juice a week (c.£5)

c)       One designer t-shirt each year (c.£30 – £60)

In our experience the case is largely (100%!) an overwhelming YES! So read on and let us tell you how it works…

How It Works

Sponsoring a child is easy, transparent and secure.

Our goal here is to provide the scholar with the opportunity of a lifetime and to demonstrate clearly to the donor that his / her donation is immediately making a difference. We promise to provide you with full transparency throughout your time with us.

We also greatly encourage the development of a relationship between the donor and scholar, as we’ve found that this can help to foster the students' upbringing – we help you do this by organizing written communication, blogs, photographs…the list goes on!

One more thing – whilst sponsorships are generally for a year period and granted to a particular child, our aim is to develop the donor / scholar relationship to a level where the donor continues to support the student, at least until the end of the current education tier, if not further! We have seen first hand the detrimental effects of removing sponsorships from students – if there are any problems with donations we encourage donors to let us know so we can help.

Sorry – we’re rambling, so let’s tell you how easy it is to make that difference we’ve been talking about:

Step 1: Choose Your Scholarship

  • Primary School, Middle School, Secondary School or University. Note that we offer Bursaries for Primary, Middle and Secondary students, and Scholarships for University students

Step 2: Pick Your Scholar and Name Your Scholarship

  • We keep a small and regularly updated list of potential scholars, where we seek to provide a brief description of circumstances

As a donor, you are given the opportunity to:

  • Have your own personalized CNYT Scholarship
  • Interact with the student, either through letters or a visit[1]
  • Receive regular updates on the child through our blog and Donor Management team
  • Offer additional gifts at special occasions (Birthdays, Graduations, etc)?

Step 3: Donate!

  • We understand that donors have different donation preferences – so we offer the flexibility of monthly (though, for a minimum for 12 months) or lump sum donation (by the way, plenty of employers have schemes that will match your charitable donation so don’t forget to check this out!) A link is needed here
  • Our donations are managed by JustGiving, which enables us to claim Gift Aid which helps us cover the transactional costs related to the sponsorship, ensuring that your donation reaches the child in a timely and efficient manner

We hope we’ve managed to explain clearly and directly what we do and how we do it. The important fact to take away is that we are creating opportunities for children to do great things. If you’d like to talk more about us and our scholarships, leave us a message via Contact Form.

So, for those of you ready to do this, click the link and let’s hit the ground running together.

[1] Whilst we encourage visits by donors, we are eager to limit this to situations where the donor has been committed to the student for a substantial period of time (minimum one year).
