In 2008, following the earthquake tragedy in the Sichuan Province, the CNYTrust unanimously voted to establish a project that would seek to aid those affected. Therefore, between the 25th – 27th December 2008, Donna Gao visited a primary school in the Sichuan Province to understand better the effects of the disaster and the problems which were being faced on a day-to-day basis. What follows is a detailed diary and submission of her thoughts, impressions and recollections from the visit.

2008 Hyde Park Run

posted ‎‎2 Dec 2008 01:27‎‎ by Donna Gao   [ updated ‎‎3 Dec 2008 17:55‎‎ ]

The annual London Hyde Park run organised by the Cambridge University Chinese New Year Trust Society took place
on 16th November was another enormous success this year, with the money raised currently standing at
1700.
This was also the first time societies from the London universities, namely LSE CSSA, OCS Children's Fund as well as
Imperial College CSSA, have worked together with the Cambridge society. This is an exciting step forward for both
the society and the Trust, as we look forward to working closely in the future to further our work in improving
education for the underprivileged children in China.
Despite the grey and drizzly weather, nearly 100 people turned up to run or cheer or to hand out the much
appreciated water and chocolates. Four Trustees - Sissi, Yanlan, Alex and Ji-Peng (in their varying states of fitness
and attire), were amongst the 45 runners. A special mention must go to Alex who dazzled us all with his tartan skirt
and pink sequined shawl. Pictures will follow shortly!
The run was a great opportunity for the Trustees to meet the enthusiastic members of the current society. The slick
organisation, tastefully designed T-shirts and great crowd atmosphere of the run bodes well for the 2009 Cambridge
University Chinese New Year ball themed Shanghai Bund.

Sponsorship from Miss China UK

posted ‎‎14 Nov 2008 02:14‎‎ by Donna Gao   [ updated ‎‎1 Dec 2008 22:36‎‎ ]

Miss China UK, a beauty pageant held in the UK for contestants of Chinese ancestry, was fascinated by CNYTrust’s dedication and passion and hope that the Miss China UK 2008 event would be a good opportunity to raise funds to support future projects from all generous guests to improve access to education for children and young people in rural China. Funds will be raised by a certain percentage of tickets and merchandise sales. There will also be a raffle prize show to be organized on the final night and funds from sales will go towards the charity. In addition, a charity event will be held during promotional week involving the 12 Miss China UK contestants raising additional funds.

New University Teacher Scholarships

posted ‎‎4 Oct 2008 05:19‎‎ by Donna Gao   [ updated ‎‎26 Nov 2008 00:18‎‎ ]

In the past CNYTrust has supported students through university with scholarships by partnering with established programs and institutions in China. This year CNYTrust will launch a new program in partnership with Capital Normal University to provide scholarships for teaching degrees to exceptional students who show dedication to helping the education system in their local communities.  This scholarship will cover the cost of living/board for students whose families would not otherwise be able to afford it.  Government subsidies will cover tuition.

These students will be selected based on financial background, demographic background, academic performance, career expectation and devotion to society. They will be bound to retuning to education after their studies for a period of 3 years. On return to their community after graduation, these teachers will be able to provide first-class, inspirational teaching to those of similar backgrounds to themselves.

The CNYTrust Scholarship program started in September 2008 and is in the selection phase at the moment. The scholarships cover the length of the students’ 4-year course. CNYTrust will seek to develop a close relationship with the recipients of the scholarships and provide career and general university guidance to the students as well so that they maximize their time at college.

Sichuan Earthquake Support

posted ‎‎24 Sep 2008 17:09‎‎ by Alvin Chuang   [ updated ‎‎21 Jan 2009 03:38‎‎ by Donna Gao ]

There has been devastating effect caused by an earthquake that struck the Wenchuan and Beichuan areas of Sichuan Province on the afternoon of Monday the 12th of May, 2008.

Not only did the province suffer extensive earthquake damage but subsequent tremors and resulting flood lakes have continued to threaten the region.

Thousands of people lost their lives and many more have been displaced. In many ways children have been hardest hit with the physical and emotional distress caused by such a disaster. However we can help some students regain hope and a chance to a future through assisting them with access to education.

CNYTrust have received the donation of £4,992 by Redington Partners LLP in support of the employee donations.

In order to help relieve some of the disastrous effects caused by the earthquake, CNYTrust has decided to provide scholarships for students from Yunxi Primary School of Sichuan who have suffered losses due to the earthquake. CNYTrust will be responsible for finding students; ensuring the proper use of funds and tracking the results of the donations made.

CNYTrust shall be responsible for carefully documenting and tracking the progress of all the students involved.
