High Speed Rail

On 11th March 2010, the Government announced its detailed proposals to build a new high-speed rail link between London and Birmingham, with less detailed plans to continue to the north of Birmingham. Work is unlikely to start before 2017.

The proposed route cuts though the Chiltern Hills between Gerrards Cross and Wendover, and will have a significant impact on the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Details of the High Speed 2 plans can be found here (Jan 2012).
Earlier versions: Feb 2011 consultation and March 2010 plans.

The Chiltern Countryside Group's view on HS2 proposals

The Chiltern Countryside Group upholds its mission statement to 'Preserve the peace of the Chilterns' and this is our paramount objective.
Whilst we are open to the principle of High Speed Rail, the CCG believe the case for HS2 rail has yet to be proven.
Therefore, we strongly oppose all of the three HS2 routes outlined by HS2 Ltd., any of which would have a seriously detrimental impact upon the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The Committee's findings affirm the CCG's views that the current HS2 plans require major revision; that spending further time, short relative to any HS2 project's life, is more likely to achieve an outcome for the UK's future transport needs which is truly in the best interests of our nation.

Media articles on a possible extension of tunnelling in the Chilterns AONB. We are advised as follows by David Lidington MP for Aylesbury Vale:

'I [David Lidington] am aware that several media outlets have commented that the reason for the delay is so an assessment can be made on the feasibility of further tunnelling in the Amersham area. The Secretary of State’s statement makes no reference to this and subsequent enquiries have led me to understand that no decisions have been made about further tunneling  and that a variety of options are being looked at. Therefore, until the announcement the issues raised in the recent articles are nothing more than pure media speculation.'
