Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) has come forth in helping The Children’s Museum of Klamath Falls to bring exciting and educational exhibits to the museum. OIT students will be working with the director and museum faculty to create five different exhibits that teach children about engineering and science applications. OIT will be donating the exhibits to The Children’s Museum so they can be viewed by the community of Klamath Falls.
Each group will research different science and engineering ideas to create different learning environments for the exhibits. OIT students will use their engineering skills to create and design the exhibits using a standard engineering design process. The individual groups will then use funding and donations to gather materials to create the exhibit. After the exhibits have been manufactured they will be analyzed to make sure they meet the requirements to be displayed in the museum.
Pulley Exhibit:
Our exhibit is to allow children and viewers to see and
learn how pulleys work. A pulley is a
simple machine that uses grooved wheels and a rope to raise, lower or move a
load. The exhibit will show how man power and a simple machine is used to lift
heavy objects with less power. The exhibit will consist of three pulley setups.
Each setup will have different pulley setups with the same weight throughout:
- Setup
1 will be a single pulley with a 10-15 lb weight or sand bag.
- Setup
2 will be a compound pulley (This will give a mechanical advantage of two) setup
with the same weight as setup 1.
- Setup
3 will be a block and tackle (A block and tackle is a compound pulley
where several pulleys are mounted on each axle, further increasing the
mechanical advantage. Block and tackles usually lift objects with a mechanical
advantage greater than two) setup with the same weight as setup 1 and 2.
As each user goes from the simple system to a compound
system and finally to the block and tackle system the effort to pull the weight
in the air gets easier as the user progresses through the setups. This will
also work the opposite way by having the weight get harder to pull starting at
the block and tackle and going to the simple system. The exhibit will have a
brief description and history of pulleys displayed on the exhibit. Also the
exhibit will have description of each station and how the pulley system works posted
