In a family daycare for children, two basic concepts in property fences should be distinguished: fences surrounding the backyard and
fences surrounded the front yard. In the state of California, the laws for large family childcare homes make a distinction between backyard
and frontyard: Backyards must have a 6-foot-tall fence or wall, but the front yard is off-limits to child-play, regardless of fences or walls.
But why have a fence in the front yard if children are not allowed to play there? The answer is not in playtime but in the times children are
dropped off and picked up by parents or guardians. When a parent is talking with a child care provider (not technically called a "babysitter,"
although some people call them that) in the front yard, the child may wonder off or even run into the street if there is no frontyard fence for
the protection of the children in child care.
