The CCNY chapter of Chi Epsilon was founded in 1949.
Chi Epsilon is the national civil engineering honors society. We are dedicated to the purpose of maintaining and promoting the status of civil engineering as an ideal profession. Chi Epsilon was organized to recognize the characteristics of the individual civil engineer deemed to be fundamental to the successful pursuit of an engineering career, and to aid in the development of those characteristics in the civil engineering student. Engineering, the application of scientific principles to the practical needs of society, is assuming a constantly increasing responsibility for the well-being of all people, and thus requires competence of the highest order. This responsibility can be discharged only by a professional group whose members are possessed of a good basic technical ability, intelligence, moral integrity, and effective social poise in their relationship with the larger community of which they are part. To contribute to the improvement of the profession, Chi Epsilon fosters the development and exercise of sound traits of character and technical ability among civil engineers, and its members, by precept and example, toward an ever higher standard of professional service.
Eligibility
Undergraduates who wish to be eligible to Chi Epsilon must rank scholastically in the top third of their class, complete one-half the work towards their bachelor's degree, and be active members in the local civil engineering community. They must also in some way demonstrate exemplary scholarship, character, practicality, and sociability. Transfer students, and second degree students are also eligible and are subject to the same criteria.
Induction Process
The process of induction of new members is very formal, and statistically around 7-10 students are inducted per year. Typically, the process begins with a preliminary selection by the civil engineering department, when a list of names is provided to the Chi Epsilon club of the top third of the class of a corresponding year and who have finished about half of their coursework during January. This eligible list comprises around 35-40 students. A series of interviews are subsequently scheduled with each of the prospective "inductees". Usually, the criteria that we most heavily emphasize is "service to the department". Service can come in many different forms, but is predominantly characterized by involvement and dedication to various student clubs and organizations (Steel Bridge, Concrete Canoe, ASCE CCNY, Engineers Without Borders, etc.). In most cases, service is to the civil engineering department at City College, however service to other departments or societies is also considered. After the interview period, Chi Epsilon will select the new 7-10 inductees as new members and carry out a formal induction ceremony with affiliated alumni and faculty of the school. This ceremony is always in the springtime at around early April.
