We do many wonderful things in our GATE class. Below are samples of some of the projects we have completed so far this year.

On September 23, the G.A.T.E.rs read a book called The Story of Ferdinand and did some academic activities. Ferdinand was a young bull who would always go out to his favorite cork tree, sit down and smell the flowers. On Guam 2,045 readers participated in the Read For the Record challenge by reading the book on the same day. Readers across the world broke the record for more than 150,000 people reading the same book on September 23, 2007.

Geography Bee Club
By: Kieth
On November 20, there was an island wide Geography Bee held at the Tiyan Theater. Representing Chief Brodie was Anthony Carino and myself, Kieth Nonato. I studied for about 10 days. The questions were pretty hard but, it was fun. Both Anthony and I answered a lot of questions. Some questions were like,” What island is just east of Canada?” And the answer is: Greenland. I got that question right. There were 24 different schools participating. The grade levels were 4th and 5th grade. It was a great experience even though we didn’t win. All the students got a medal for participating in the Geography Bee, donated by the Lions Club. Ms.Terri Knapp, GATE program coordinator, read the questions. The judges were Mrs.Cacares, Mrs.Guile andMrs.Jiblits.

Body Art
By Kayuana
Body Art is a fun and crafty project. All you have to do is have somebody trace your body on a piece of paper and then cut it out. Then get magazines, colored paper or news paper. Make clothes to dress up your body.and make sure they fit before you glue them on. Then take a big picture of your face then, print it on the computer and glue it on your face.
GATE skills used are: Fluency, Flexibility, Originality, Critical Thinking, Elaboration, Affective Learning and Learning How to Learn.
Coffee Filter Butterflies
By Anthony
G.A.T.E. students made butterflies out of coffee filters, paint and clothespins. We crumpled and shaped the coffee filters to look like butterfly wings. Then we slid them into the clothespins. We painted the butterflies wings and had to remember that the left wing must be the same as the right wing because the wings are symmetrical.

Eric Carle Collage
Mrs. Klemm read the G.A.T.Ers two Eric Carle books. After she read The Hungry Caterpillar, we tore out tissue paper in Eric Carle style and made a poster showing the life style of a butterfly. So, we tore out paper in the shape of an egg, a caterpiller, a cocoon and a butterfly.

Palm Tree Story
By: Jubie
Mrs. Klemm gave all the GATErs homework about a palm tree that had a penny sprouting out instead of a coconut. We were all given a piece of paper that had a picture of that and the assignment was to write a story about how that penny got there. Everybody had good stories and many were funny. We all got a chance to read our story aloud in front of the class using the microphone. Many of us enjoyed that assignment.

Science Experiment
Who Moved My Cheese
By Camille Q.
Mrs. Klemm read us the book, Who Moved My Cheese. Spencer Johnson was the author and Steve Pillegi was the illustrator. The four main characters were Sniff, Scurry, Hem and Haw. They went through a maze to find magical cheese. They are all smart in their own ways. Sniff and Scurry got up early to find cheese. Hem and Haw thought that their old cheese would always be where it was. In the end, Sniff, Scurry, Hem and Haw ate their new cheese happily. Since we heard the story, we have had many discussions on how change in our lives can be good or bad. The important thing is we need to be flexible so we can adapt to change. GATE skills used for this activity were: Communication, Affective Learning, Flexibility and Fluency.
GATE Meetings
By Krisha Mae
In September, the GATErs had their first class meeting. The meeting was about a book called, “Who Moved My Cheese?” Some of the GATErs volunteered to make grilled cheese. Mrs. Klemm also brought her home-made cheese. GATErs sampled and rated their favorite cheeses. Four students volunteered to act out the story.
The G.A.T.E. skills used were Communication, Fluency, Flexibility, Elaboration, Originality and Affective Learning.
Sugar Plum Tree
By Alpacino C.
GATErs picked a name of a child on the Sugar Plum tree at the Girl Scout main office. They chose a name of an 8-year-old boy whose wish was for athletic shoes and socks. GATErs sold Gratitude Rocks to pay for socks and shoes in a fundraiser to show gratitude for their many gifts in life.
