"Scherenschnitte" by Jackie Hewitt
Paper cutting is a handcraft that dates back to Third Century BC China, and has been popular in Germany, Poland, Switzerland, and other countries for centuries. The German name for this work, scherenschnitte, is commonly used in the United States. These delicate pieces are created using tiny scissors, a craft knife or shears to cut intricate designs from paper. They are then usually framed to decorate homes for everyday and special occasions. Scherenshcnitte have long been given as gifts and cherished as family heirlooms.
