How to say “not” in Cherokee:

The way to say “not” in Cherokee is easy; you just put /tla yi-/ on the verb (/tla y-/ if the verb begins with a vowel).

tla yi-goliga  ‘I do not understand’                                    tla yi-jigoti  ‘I do not see it’                                    tla yi-jisgwadia  ‘I am not finished’

tla yi-gatvgi’a  ‘I do not hear it’                                    tla yi-gega  ‘I am not going’                                    tla yi-jiwoniha  ‘I am not speaking’

tla y-agwanta  ‘I do not know’                                    tla y-agiha  ‘I do not have it’                                    tla y-agwaduli  ‘I do not want it’
