Please do not post my patterns or my photos anywhere on the web. Shimmering Lace Crocheted Snowflake By Cheri Mancini © 10/12/2008 The snowflake is about 4 inches in diameter.Supplies: Size 10 Crochet cotton thread, color: White/Pearl (I used Royale brand) Crochet hook – size 7 Blocking board Saran wrap to cover the blocking board Steel quilting pins (steel is rust resitant)
Note: The humps of a chain are the threads that are on the backside of a chain, that sort of look like dashes - - - - - in a row. They run right down the center of the backside of a chain. While you are crocheting a chain, if you twist the work in your hand just slightly, you can easily see these humps, and then you can find and crochet into the appropriate hump that’s called for in the pattern.
How to make a Magic Ring: http://www.crochetme.com/Dec_Jan_0405/reads_round.html , photos 1 through 6. RND 1: · Start with a magic ring (if needed, see above link, photos 1 through 6, for an instructional tutorial). Chain 4 (counts as first dc and 1 chain). [Dc, ch 1] 5 times. Slst in the 3rd chain of the beginning chain 4. Close loop by pulling on the end of thread. (This equals a total of 6 dc and 6 chains for the round.)
RND 2:
· Slst into next chain 1 space; (chain 3, slst in next space, chain 7, slst in same space ) 5 times.
· Chain 3, slst next space (into what was your beginning space), then chain 3 and dc in same space, (do this right next to the beginning slst of this round: this ch 3 and dc create the last “chain 7” loop). This round equals a total of 6 chain 3 loops and 6 chain 7 loops.
RND 3 · Slst in loop just formed, chain 3 (this chain 3 makes the first dc). Mark third chain with a gold safety pin.
· Dc, ch 1, sc in same space. *Chain 3, slst in next “chain 3 loop”, chain 3. In next loop make (sc, chain 1, 3dc, chain 1, sc). Repeat from * 4 times.
· Chain 3, slst in next loop, chain 3. In next loop make sc, chain 1, dc, and then join in the top of the beginning chain 3 (the chain marked with the gold safety pin). LEAVE SAFETY PIN IN PLACE.
RND 4: · In same loop as safety pin, make a chain 3, sc, chain 5, sc, chain 3, sc. **Chain 3, sc in each of the next 2 loops, chain 3. Skip next sc and dc, and then in the next dc (which is located in the very center of the scallop) make (sc, chain 3, sc, chain 5, sc, chain 3, sc). Repeat from ** four times. Chain 3, sc in each of the next 2 loops, chain 3. Join, with slst, in same loop as the safety pin. LEAVE SAFETY PIN IN PLACE.
RND 5: A) ***(Chain 4, dc in back “hump” of 4th chain from hook). Repeat between ( ) once.
B) Skip next chain three loop, and then slst in next sc, chain 5, trc in back “hump” of 5th chain from hook.
C) [Chain 5, slst in top 2 loops of the trc that were just worked off your hook] three times (you should have a chain 5 triple picot).
D) Chain 5, trc in back “hump” of 5th chain from hook, skip the chain five loop, and slst in next sc.
E) *Chain 4, dc in back “hump” of 4th chain from hook. Repeat from * once. Skip next chain three loop and slst in next sc.
F) Chain 3, slst between next 2 single crochets from round 4. Chain 8, sc in 4th chain from hook, chain 4, slst in same place as last slst. Chain 3, skip next chain three, and slst in next sc.
G) Repeat from *** 5 times, ending with slst in same loop as the safety pin. Fasten off, remove safety pin, and hide ends of thread. Dip snowflake in your favorite stiffener for a several moments. Blot off excess. Using a blocking board, & referring to the above photo, stretch the snowflake out, pin it in place with steel quilting pins, and let it thoroughly dry. I used an abundance of steel quilting pins on this particular design. I let my snowflakes dry overnight before removing them from the blocking board.
