FANCY CROCHETED THREAD BUTTERFLY

LOWER WINGS (corrected 1/10/05):
Row 1: Ch 13, dtr in 13th chain from hook, ch 12, slst in same ch.  Ch 16, dtr in 13th chain from hook, ch 12, slst in same chain as 2nd dtr is in.  (photo of Row 1 completed)

Row 2: 3 sc on next ch 3, 15 sc in next loop, 1 sc in dtr, 15 sc in next loop, slst between loops, 15 sc in next loop, 1 sc in dtr, 15 sc in next loop.  Do not turn.

Row 3: Slst in next 3 sc.  Ch 6, sc in 7th sc, ch 7, (dc, ch 5, dc) in next 6th sc.  (Dc, ch 5, dc in next 3rd sc) 3 times; ch 8, slst between wings.  Ch 8, (dc, ch 5,dc) in 10th sc on next wing.  (Dc, ch5, dc in next 3rd sc) 3 times; ch 7, sc in next 6th sc, ch 6, sc in last sc in loop.  Do not turn.

Row 4: Ch 2, 7 sc in next loop, 8 sc in next loop.
   *(3 sc, ch 6, slst in last sc for a p [PICOT = ch 6] and 3 sc) in next loop, 1 sc between dc*.   Repeat from * to * once.  
   **3 sc in next loop, ch 10, turn, skip 2 chains, hdc in each of next 8 chains, 3 sc in balance of same loop on wing, 1 sc between dc**.          (3 sc, p, 3 sc) in next loop, 8 sc in next loop, slst between wings, 8 sc in next loop.

LEFT UPPER WING:
Row 1: Ch 8, slst in 1st ch crocheted.  Ch 1, 14 hdc in ring, slst in first hdc.

Row 2: (Ch 6, sk 1 hdc, sc in next hdc) 3 times.
   **Ch 6, *3-dc cluster in 5th st from hook, ch 4, slst in cluster for a p [PICOT = ch4], ch 4, slst in base of cluster *.  Ch 6, 3-tr cluster in 6th st from hook, p, ch 5, slst at base of cluster.  Ch 5, and repeat from * to *.  1 sc in 1-ch preceding 1st cluster.  Sk 1 hdc on ring and sc in next hdc **.  (Ch 6, sk next hdc on ring and sc in next hdc) twice, ch 3, slst in 10th sc on top of left-side lower wing, counting out from center; ch 3, sk 1 hdc on ring and sc in next hdc.  (Ch 5,2-dc cluster in 5th ch from hook) twice with the second cluster at the tip of the 1st, ch 1, slst in center 2-ch between lower wings.

RIGHT UPPER WING:
Repeat Row 1 of LEFT UPPER WING.  Ch 3, slst in 10th sc from center on right lower wing, ch 3, sk next hdc on ring and sc in next hdc, (ch 6, sk 1 hdc on ring and sc in next hdc) twice.  Repeat LEFT UPPER WING  from ** to **.  Ch 6, (sk next hdc on ring and sc in next hdc) 3 times, (ch 5, 2-dc cluster in 5th ch from hook) twice with second cluster at the tip of the 1st cluster, ch 1, slst in 2-ch between LOWER WINGS.  Turn and repeat Row 3 of LEFT UPPER WING but DO NOT FASTEN OFF.  Ch 1, turn.

EDGE: Work sc closely in next 4 spaces as follows:  5 sc in 1st sp, then 8, 6, and 10 sc in 4th sp.  (3 sc, 5-ch p, and 2 sc) in next sp. Work sc closely in next 7 spaces as follows:  5 sc in 1st sp, then 10, 7, 6, 7, 4, and 7sc in following spaces.  Slst between wings.  On next wing work sc closely in next 7 spaces as follows: 7 sc in 1st sp, then 4, 7, 6, 7, 10,  and 5 sc in 7th sp.  (3 sc, 5-ch p, and 2 sc) in next sp.  Work sc closely in next 4 spaces as follows: 10 sc in 1st sp, then 6, 8, and 5 in 4th sp.  Fasten off.

BODY: Ch 16, skip 1 st, (2 sc, 2 hdc, 5 dc, 1 sc, 4 dc, & 1 sc) on ch.  Ch 3, 3 hdc in 3rd stitch from hook, (ch 10 for feelers, sk 1, 9 slst on ch) twice, slst in last hdc, (3 hdc, ch 2, slst) in same st with previous hdc, slst at base of next sc.  Fasten off.  Sew body to wings, between wings.  With butterfly on ironing board, right side down, gently/carefully steam press butterfly.
