Welshmen invade Manchester!

posted 26 Mar 2012 06:51 by chepstow male voice choir

Saturday, March 24th was a significant date in the Choir's calendar. Representatives from 32 choirs from all over Wales, totalling over 900 choristers, gathered in the Manchester Evening News Arena (in Manchester, obviously) for the 50th Anniversary concert of the South Wales branch of the Wales Association of Male Choirs. It was the culmination of two years' work, learning new pieces, arranging the trip, and so on, and what a wonderful experience it was. Of course, we were disappointed that the Albert Hall was not the venue, but that's another story. Of the 18 songs that the massed choirs sang, half were completely new to us and it's a great tribute to Elaine, and to Karl before her, that we reached the concert totally ready for it, given the other learning commitments we've had along the way. The young soloists who performed during the evening were all superb - it's a dead cert that Charlie Lovell Jones, Rhys Meilyr Jones, Joshua Mills and Kate Harwood will be heard of a lot in the future.

Community events and a whole lot more

It may seem, from the lack of news postings in recent weeks, that not much has been going on - nothing could be further from the truth!!
We have been busy practising the pieces for the Wales Association of Male Choirs 50th Anniversary concert in Manchester, the last rehearsal for which was on 19th Feb. We've also been learning the pieces for our entry in this year's National Eisteddfod, so while we haven't done any full concerts for a while, there's been a lot going on.

On St.David's Day, 1st March we made our annual visit to two of Chepstow's primary schools, Pembroke and The Dell where we sang to Infants and Juniors, all suitably clad in traditional apparel. It's always a lot of fun and this year was no exception. Elaine's experience as a primary school teacher pays dividends on these occasions!

On Thurs., 15th March Ken Hewitt, the Vice Chairman of the Welsh Rugby Union brought the Triple Crown trophy, won by Wales this year, to Chepstow Comprehensive School. We were invited to go along to provide musical support for the event, and there were plenty of choristers who neede no second bidding! John Warnes and Rosemarie Lewis made up the musical team.

Another rugby-related event took place on Sat. 17th March when we sang in Tintern Abbey to a group of French financial journalists on their way to see France beaten by Wales in Cardiff. Not sure what singing they heard in the ground before the match, but at least they know what Calon Lan sounds like when it's sung properly.

Wanted - an Assistant Musical Director

posted 25 Jan 2012 04:24 by chepstow male voice choir

The Choir would like to hear from anyone with suitable experience/qualifications who is interested in the post of Assistant Musical Director.

          We
rehearse on two evenings each week, Monday and Thursday, excepting Bank Holidays and, normally, the month of August, with a short break after Christmas. In addition to the two weekly rehearsals the choir has a very full calendar of concerts and private events such as weddings and corporate functions.

The musical team, at present, is made up of the accomplished and highly respected Musical Director, Elaine Matthews, who has a long and happy association with this Choir since its formation in 1988, and our two great accompanists, Rosemarie Lewis and Eileen Chesworth, who have long musical experience in a variety of roles.
        .
Apart from the Annual Concert in the Spring and the Christmas concert in December, which generate revenue to keep us going, all other events are performed on behalf of sponsors or organisers for both local and national charities. It is a proud boast that since its inception in 1988, the amount of money which the choir has helped to raise is approaching the £400,000 mark.

Anyone who might wish to be considered for the role of Assistant Musical Director should send a CV to one of the following, either by post or by e-maI:-

Life membership goes to Ray Jones

posted 23 Dec 2011 06:48 by chepstow male voice choir

We were very pleased to confer Honorary Life Membership of the Choir on Ray Jones at the Christmas concert on December 17th. Ray, alas, no longer sings with us but he has made a major contribution over the years. He sang in the baritone section for 17 years and gave countless solo performances at concerts as well as singing duets and trio pieces with other members. Fortunately, he has agreed to come back to do solos from time to time so he is still very much on the scene.

The year ends on the highest of notes!

Another busy year is over. We did a concert in Chipping Sodbury on Saturday 10th December where over £700 was raised for the local Rotary Club. This was treated as a dress rehearsal for the big one, our Christmas concert held in Chepstow Leisure Centre on Saturday 17th in front a capacity audience of about 550. It was a great success. Karl Daymond appeared in the first half as soloist and in the second half we were treated to the witty tongue of Mme Rhondda Tannoy. The main part of the evening, though, belonged to the Choir itself and many of the audience made very kind and complimentary comments about our performance which were a strong reflection on the hard work that Elaine has put in to maintaining and polishing our performance. Rose and Eileen gave of their best, as always.

Christmas starts in earnest!

On Saturday 3rd December the Christmas season-proper opened for us with an attendance at the dinner of the Classic Car Club. A special request had been received that we should burst in on the assembled company singing Calon Lan. This we were able to do and it had the desired effect of surprise and delight.  The intention was to follow that with Men of Harlech as an introduction to the main part of the programme, but, Alas! the electric piano had not been turned on and Elaine and Rose were horrified when Rose hit the keys and nothing happened  -  such are the vagaries of a live performance! The audience took it in good part and were most appreciative of our singing, treating us to a standing ovation and demanding an encore. Now it's full speed down the line to the Christmas concert on Saturday 17th with a stop at Chipping Sodbury for a pre-Christmas-concert concert on Saturday 10th.

We will remember them.

Once again we were pleased to contribute to the service of remembrance held in St.Mary's Priory Church on Sunday 13th November. This year we learnt a new piece, Agnus Dei ("O, Lamb of God who takest away the sins the world, grant us Thy peace") set to Elgar's Enigma Variation, "Nimrod". We also sang "World War Two Requiem" which has become something of a favourite for the occasion. This song was written by a member of the mixed choir of s'Hertogenbosh in Holland and given to us when we visited there a few years ago. The town was liberated in 1944 by the 53rd Welsh Division, in particular the Manchester Regiment, and every year their remembrance celibration includes a Welsh choir. We have been privileged to have been invited to go three times.

The festive season starts early for Chepstow Male Voice Choir!

For the last few years we have assisted the local department store, Herbert Lewis - an institution in the town, in the kick-off to their Christmas season. This year is no exception and Elaine and Eileen took us through a few pieces from our repertoire as well as some carols to the delight, we hope, of the shoppers.

Three choirs at Oxford

posted 26 Oct 2011 16:25 by chepstow male voice choir

On Saturday 22nd October we went to Oxford as the guests of Oxford Welsh Male Voice Choir, along with Maesteg Gleemen. The concert was in aid of a local charity, the Mulberry Bush School, which helps children who suffer from abuse. There were about 90 voices in the combined choirs and the acoustics of Oxford Town Hall did ample justice to the sound. The tenor soloist Paul Arden Griffith performed a selection from his repertoire - what a voice!

Concert for the RNLI in St. Thomas A Beckett Church, Shirenewton

posted 17 Oct 2011 03:36 by chepstow male voice choir

32 Choristers turned out for a very successful concert on Friday 14th October. Tom Lewis and Clive Oliver sang a solo each and we were joined by Clive Lewis (Rose's husband) and 16 year-old Elodie Gwyn who did two cornet duets. Appropriately, Elaine chose to start the concert with "Calm Is The Sea" and end it with "Sailing" both of which were well received by the capacity audience. Confirmation is awaited that the amount raised on behalf of the RNLI is around £900..
