Guide for New Feet If you have half a mind to join the Hash, that's all it takes. If you have hashed before you will know the format but for the newcomers here's a quick rundown on what happens. On alternate Sunday afternoons throughout the year the Chengdu Panda Hash meets and hashers are picked up in a bus from Yinhe Dynasty and Orchard Villas. We then head off to a venue chosen by the HARE(S). On arrival at the run site the HOUNDS are given the "ON" by the GRAND MASTER and the HOUNDS set off along a clearly defined trail (blobs of flour and/or chalk arrows) with the front runners calling "ON, ON" and the HASH HORN blowing his own trumpet for the benefit of the slower runners and latecomers. Every so often the trail will end, signified by a circle with an X in it on the trail - Å . This is known as a CHECK and the frontrunners, on reaching the check, start searching for the new trail, calling "CHECKING". The new trail can start up to 100 metres from the check in any direction. The time taken by the frontrunners to find the new trail allows the runners at the back (the "social or chat-pack") to catch up thus increasing the chances of everyone reaching the end of the run at roughly the same time. The frontrunners will usually find that the cunning hares have laid some FALSE TRAILS in addition to the real trail - these falsies usually consist of up to 3 blobs or arrows followed by an X or FT (false trail). This ensures that the really fit types, known as FRBs (Front Running Bastards) will become exhausted more quickly and be forced to join the social pack. If you reach a check and know that the FRBs are ahead of you, you can shout "are you?" (where are you?) and hopefully you will hear an answering "On On" or a blast from the Hash Horn. Hash runs are usually 5 - 10 kilometres long and are designed to last 1 to 1 1/2 hours. At the end of the run there is the Hash Circle where the GM (Grand Master) welcomes new runners and thanks the hares and the RA (Religious Adviser) deals with Short Cutters and other Hash sinners. REMEMBER
