Hot Tips
From E.J. - Those old creasote ties along the E&N should be disposed of properly. There is a big pile just above Askew Creek.
From Mary - People are already starting to dump their yard waste in ditches and along the railway line. This just spreads invasive species. We have free yard waste dumping at Peerless Road. Use it!
From Rodney - The old MacMillan haul road is getting to be a pig sty. Why do people throw their garbage there? It pollutes Mill Creek and looks ugly.
From T.R.J. - Askew Park is called a "wilderness park". Why doesn't someone (the muni, CRA, Communities in Bloom) take care of the invasive plants like the daphne, blackberry, holly, ivy and other stuff?
From F.R. - I see the Victoria Police are cracking down on loud motorcycles and cars. Can North Cowichan RCMP start doing the same thing? Chemainus and Victoria Roads need policing for noise and speed.
From Don - Communities in Bloom do hard work at the roundabout, but why plant all those annuals and exotics that need watering. We have some great native plants in our yard that are beautiful, perennial and NEVER need watering.

Big week for Echo Heights Forest

2 big meetings this week

Strategy Session on Monday, 6:30 p.m. at the Chemainus Legion

Our Penelakut neighbours will be joining all Friends of Echo Heights Forest for this session to plan for the public hearing on the Echo Heights comprehensive development plan bylaw that will be held on Thursday at Municipal Hall. One of our favourite people – Augie Sylvester – will attend and he is getting the word out around Penelakut Island for other members of Chief & Council, staff and the community to attend. Augie is a member of council and an much-esteemed elder who is very knowledgeable about the medicine that grows in the forest. He wrote a letter to North Cowichan asking “Why are you cutting down my pharmacy?”.

WANT TO MAKE A VIDEO?

Digital video sumbissions are being allowed by North Cowichan for consideration before the public hearing. So, if you can’t make it to the public hearing or are too shy to speak, facilities will be available at the Strategy Session on July 18 (6:30 p.m. at the Legion) for anyone to make a record a short video submission (in private). We will deliver them to North Cowichan before the 4 p.m. deadline on June 20.

Public Hearing on Thursday, 7 p.m. at North Cowichan municipal hall

A public hearing into Bylaw 3454, Official Community Plan Amendment Bylaw (Echo Heights Comprehensive Development Plan) 2011 will be held in council chambers. Four bylaws are scheduled for hearings that evening. The CRA has officially requested that Echo Heights be first on the agenda because of the high interest as well as the need for Penelakut residents to catch the last ferry home.

RIDES TO THE HEARING

At Monday evening’s meeting, plans will be announced about the large bus and car-pooling to the public hearing. Wouldn’t a parade of cars be impressive?
