Cuentan que el primer ermitano del Carmen fue un rico senor, que habia pasado su juventud gozando de todos los placeres. Cansado y arrepentido vino a este lugar para concluir los ultimos dias de su vida mortificandose y rezando en el altar de la capilla. Despues de muerto este senor, lo reemplazo el tio Santos, que era de estatura gigantesca y piel morena. Se ignoraban los antecedentes, solo se supo que habia llegado al pueblo peregrinando. Siempre saludaba a los marineros que entraban y salian a la pesca, y encendia fuego de noche a modo de pequeno faro. Cultivaba la escasa tierra de la isla y pescaba, y aprovechaba la bajamar para acercarse al pueblo si necesitaba algo. Un dia al no escuchar la campana los vecinos se acercaron a ver que ocurria y llegaron a tiempo de escuchar las ultimas palabras del Tio Santos, que pidio ser enterrado junto a la Virgen, y asi se hizo. **************************************************************************************** They tell that the first hermit of Carmen was a rich gentleman, who had spent his youth enjoying all the pleasures. la devocion a la Virgen del Carmen esta muy presente en el pueblo chileno y fue traida en 1595 por los Agustinos, quienes predican intensamente la devocion de Nuestra Senora bajo la advocacion del Carmen. En 1643 fundan la Cofradia Nacional del Carmen en Concepcion. Cada 16 de julio se realizaban procesiones por el centro de la ciudad. En 1690 llegan las primeras monjas carmelitas a fundar en Chile el Monasterio de Carmen Alto en la actual calle Carmen esquina de Alameda) y en 1760 fundan el Carmen Bajo (actualmente Independencia 229).Estos dos monasterios fortalecen la devocion a Nuestra Senora del Carmen.
