This list of the deceased is transcribed from the Chatsworth Plaindealer issue published August 12, 1887. Note that some are listed only as man, woman or child. Please consider the time this was written and the possibility of spelling errors by the reporters, and take that into considersation. Also note that this is a list of 78 and I believe the actual count was over 80. For questions and comments please email me. MISS MARY MCAVOY, of Peoria was taken out of the wreck alive and placed in the hall, but her injuries were at once pronounced fatal. All that excellent nursing could do was done for her, but she passed from her intense suffering to the unknown world at ten minutes past eleven Thursday morning. MR.P.P. VAN LIEW, of Galesburg, had just left a party of friends in one car and was procedding to the next when the accident happened. He was taken out badly crushed and taken to Piper City, where he died at 8 p.m. Thursday evening. MRS. VAN LIEW, his wife, had been notified and reached Chatsworth on the 8 p.m. special. She sought out MR. JAS.A.SMITH, who, with her, proceded to the depot and wired Piper City to know of MR. VAN LIEW'S condition. Scarcely had the message been handed the operator when the answer was handed the writer with the words,"MR. VAN LIEW just died." One of the saddest tasks of our life was breaking the news to the lady.
