Charlton Rovers U-9s (Reds) play in the Cheltenham Youth League.
We train at Balcarras indoor sports facility every Friday night from 6 till 7pm during the winter, and at the Beeches during the summer. We generally train on Saturday mornings at the Beeches or on the grass at Balcarras School when there are no matches.

Saturday 11th October
Charlton Rovers 10 Charlton Rovers Blues 0
The local derby provided the team with their first victory of the season. We were able
to overcome the determined defence of the Blues scoring five goals in each half. However
great credit must go to the team spirit and determination of the Blues who continued to
compete as hard as they could despite the mounting goals and particular mention should
go to their goalkeeper Ben who played extremely well.
George scored our first hat trick of the season in an impressive performance.

The team went into this game full of confidence after their victory over the Blues.
Both teams played well and the sides were evenly matched until late in the first half
when Ben managed to score and shortly thereafter, following an unfortuate
error, Will was able to turn the ball into the net to increase the lead.
In the second half further goals followed from Aidan, Jonathan and George to secure a
convincing win although the score line probably flattered our performance.
We defended well throughout with Max Tombs being very strong and determined.

Saturday 29th November
Charlton Rovers 7 Southside Tigers 0
After a number of weeks without a game the team had the opportunity to put their training into effect
and performed extremely well. In the first half two excellent changes were created but both were well
saved by the keeper before Aidan finally broke deadlock with a well taken goal. In the second half
the fininshing was more decisive and after Ben scored to increase our lead William scored a hat trick.
Near the end of the game Toby got on the scoresheet before William finished a great performance with
his fourth goal of the game. The team played well with good passing movements and great support.

Charlton Rovers 2 Cleeve Colts United 1
Unfortunately by the time of the second game the very cold weather conditions were beginning to effect
the players and they were against a very determined and well orgainsed team in Cleeve Colts United.
In the first half Cleeve took a deserved lead as the team stuggled to put their passes together. In the
second half there was more endeavour and although the team did not play to their ability, for which
Cleeve must take a lot of the credit, we did manage to score twice - both goals by William to secure
victory in a very hard fought contest.

Saturday 6th December
Charlton Rovers 1 Churchdown Panthers Colts 0
This proved to be a very tight, exciting and frankly entertaining game between two very closely matched teams.
In the first half Churchdown had the majority of the possession and the greater territorial advantage, but we
defended tenaciously with the defenders James and Tom having very solid games and Ben making a fine save,
which meant we were able to hang on until half time. In the second half we had more of the possesion and
territorial advantage, Ben scored a good goal after a great ball from William following a number of quick passes.
Later in the half William was unlucky when his shot hit the post. Churchdown came back into the game after the
goal but another greater performance from Max Lord kept the team together to secure the hard earned win.

Saturday 13th December
Charlton Rovers 1 Cheltenham Saracens 3 (Cup)
We did not play as well as we have done in recent weeks and there was no doubt that Saracens were the better team
and throughly deserved their victory. In the first half we were subject to a great deal of pressure from Saracens but
managed to survive until half time with neither side scoring. We defended resolutely,with Tom playing particularly
well at full back and Max Lord working tirelessly. In the second half the pressure from a well organised and skilful
Saracens team took its toll and early in the half the goal that had been coming for some time was conceded. Saracens
increased their lead shortly therafter and when the third goal was conceded the game was effectively over. The team
continued to try hard but could not get their passing going. We secured a consolation goal when William scored direct
from a corner.

Saturday 21st February
Charlton Rovers 4 Leckhampton Rovers Panthers 0
Unfortunately because of adverse weather conditions and other factors we had not played a competitive game for
over two months but this did not effect the team who started very brightly with good passing movements. The first goal
came about half way through the half from Will who shortly thereafter double his and the teams score following an
unfortuante error by the goalkeeper. Leckhampton had limited numbers and having already played one game seemed
to be tiring but nothing would have prevented Jonathan's great goal from the left just before half time. In the second half
the team continued to play well good levels of possession and eventually a fourth goal came from Ben following a through
ball by Aidan. Particular metion should go to Jacob who was extremely effective playing in a new position of defensive midfield
and James who absolutely rock solid at the back.

Charlton Rovers 3 Churchdown Panthers 2
The team continued to play well at the start of the second game and took a first half lead of two goals both goals coming
from Aidan following through balls from midfield from Ben. James who had moved into defensive midfield was again very
prominant with a very impressive work rate. In the second half Churchdown were the dominant side, it is possible with a
small squad on the day and two consecutive games we tired but to take nothing away from Churchdown they pressed hard
and had the majority of the possession and the chances. They pulled a goal back and we were under significant pressure
until on the break Aidan was brought down in the penalty area and Will very confidently slotted home the penalty in the bottom
left corner. Again Churchdown came back and got a further goal but we managed to hold on until the final whistle.

Saturday 28th February
Charlton Rovers 0 Leckhampton Rovers Cougars 4
This week we have to accept we were outplayed by a better team who were well organised, athletic and played good football.
At half time we were only 0-1 down, and that goal as a result of an unfortunate goalkeeping error following several fine saves,
but we never threatened Leckhampton's goal. Particular mention should go to James who was again rock solid in defence
cutting out a number of threatening attacks. In the second half following a reorganisation we started reasonably well, although again
Leckampton were extremely solid atthe back and we never looked like scoring. After Leckhampton scored their second goal they
became totally dominant and we were under almost continuous pressure and were unable to retain possesion. Leckhampton's
final goal just before full time was an excellent and powerful solo effort.
Saturday 7th March
Charlton Rovers 4 Abbeymead Rovers Blacks 0
A good win, although the score may slightly flatter our performance. The first half was close. Max L playing very well on the right wing
and the defence was solid. Eventually we broke the deadlock when George won the ball in the penalty area and managed to get the ball
to Will who slotted it home very well. Abbeymead remained a danger and Tom was needed to make a good save to keep the scores
level. In the second half we managed to secure a greater amount of possesion which led to three further goals, two from Jacob coming
forward well from midfield. The final goal was scored by George who had been a threat all game. James played well in defensive midfield
to ensure we retained a clean sheet.

Charlton Rovers 1 Cheltenham Saracens 0
An eagerly awaited league game after we were knocked out of the Cup by Saracens back in December and the game was extremely tight
throughout. In the first half the game was even until Will scored a magnificant goal from the right wing to put is into the lead. Having taken the
lead we were then put under almost constant pressure by Saracens who had a number of very threatening corner kicks which we just managed
to keep out through solid defence work and safe hands from Max T. In the second half the game was very even with both sides going close and
Saracens having two very near misses, Our defence played well with Tom being particularly eye catching with a number of well timed inteventions
and tackles.The game remained extremely tense, although played in an excellent spirit until the final whistle.

Player of the week - Tom Saturday 14th March Charlton Rovers 0 FC Lakeside Blues 2 Despite the result, both teams were evenly matched in this competitive game. Throughout the first half Lakeside were restricted to shots from distance which were easily saved by Max T in goal. George and Max L on the wings had a number of good runs without creating a clear chance. Will went closest to scoring for Rovers when he ran onto a long ball from Aidan and unluckily hit the post with a left foot shot, with the ball rebounding into the keepers hands. He also forced an excellent save from the Lakeside keeper with a long shot. Lakeside then took the lead from a corner, with Rovers failing to block a close range shot after the initial clearance fell to a Lakeside player. They then went two down when another corner caused confusion in the Rovers defence, who allowed the Lakeside striker to collect the ball on the near post, turn and shoot. The second half saw few chances, the best falling to Lakeside when they shot past George and hit the post. Rovers pressed hard, with Max T and Jonathan playing particularly well down the wings, and Tom making a number of surging runs out of defence. However, Rovers failed to create a clear shooting chance in the second half, due to commited defending by Lakeside. Player of the week - Jonathan
Saturday 28th March Charlton Rovers 1 Cleeve Colts 0 This was a game where we were under pressure for long periods of the game but defended with great commitment and managed to score a breakaway goal to secure victory. In the first half Cleeve had the majority of the possesion and we were under significant pressure but Cleeve had few clear cut chances on goal. Tom was outstanding at the back making a number of last ditch tackles or interventions to prevent good goal scoring opportunities. Although we made a couple of breaks the Cleeve goalkeeper did not have to make any meaningful saves and the score at half time was 0-0 In the second half the pressure from Cleeve intensified and Ben in goal for Rovers had to make a number of outstanding saves. Cleeve were awarded a free kick in the middle of the penalty box for a deemed back pass to the goalkeeper. The resultant free kick brought another fine save from Ben. About midway through the half we made a break out of defence which Will managed to control and as the Cleeve keeper advanced he was able to get the ball over the keeper and it bounced into the net. For the remaining minutes we were able to hang on to the lead, with Tom again prominent in defence, to achieve a hard earned victory. Player of the week - Tom
Saturday 5th April Charlton Rovers 2 F C Lakeside Whites 0 The scoreline does not perhaps reflect the dominance that we had in this game although Lakeside defended with great spirit. We had control of the possession and territory for large periods of the game and did not seriously look like conceding a goal. However for all our possession and territorial advantage it was not until quite late in the first half that we achieved our breakthrew, but when it came it was an excellently worked goal. There was a good passing movement betweeen Jacob and Jonathan who then passed the ball through to Will who took the chance very well. The score remained the same until half time. In the second half we continued to maintain our pressure and finally the second goal came. The ball was bobbling in the penalty area Toby tried to shoot, the ball broke to George, and he was able to put it into the net. Lakeside had more possession after the second goal but did not have a serious goal scoring opportunity and the game fininshed with a well deserved victory. Charlton Rovers 3 Cleeve Colts Rovers 3 An absolute cracker of a game that was a credit to both sides played in a competitive but excellent spirit with great skill being displayed by both teams. Three times Cleeve took the lead and three times we were able to get back on level terms and ultimately a draw was probably a fair result. Cleeve took the lead quite early in the first half with a well taken goal following a good passing movement. We responded well and after a period of pressure Will was able to latch onto a good goal scoring opportunity and pull the side level. The teams were then evenly matched until shortly before half time an error in communication between our keeper and defender led to an unmissable goal scoring opportunity being presented to Cleeve and we were behind again. The score remained the same until half time. In the second half the teams we started to play better football and were pressing hard for an equaliser. When it came it was a great goal scored by Ben from the right side of the pitch into the left hand top cormer of the goal. We then continued to press for a winner and had a number of half opportunities. Then we failed to properly clear the ball from the edge of our penalty box when we had the chance to do so Cleeve won possession and scored a good goal. Rovers responded with great spirit pressing for another equaliser and in the last minute of the game the ball fell to Toby in the box and he was able to poke it into the back of the net for a crucial equaliser. Charlton Rovers 1 Swindon Village Bowman 0 A very close contest with both sides playing well but neither side have many clear cut goal scoring opportunities and an early goal deciding the contest. The goal came early in the first half when Ben crossed from the left wing and William quickly got the ball under control in the penalty box and fired it home. The score remained the same until half time with only one real scare for Rovers when the ball bobbled in the penalty area following a corner and was not cleared there followed a goal mouth scramble until eventually Aidan brought the ball away. In the second half the sides remained evenly matched with Aidan playing brilliantly in midfield winning the ball and distributing it to great effect. There were no goals in the second half and Rovers achieved a hard earned victory. Charlton Rovers 4 Southside Wildcats 0 A good win assisted by a couple of early goals. Within minutes of the kick off the ball broke to Mattie in the penalty box and he tucked it into the left bottom corner with great assurance to give Rovers an early lead that they never looked like losing. The goal gave the side confidence and a few minutes later a great ball from Jonathan found Mattie in the penalty box and he again slotted it home in the bottom left corner. Shortly before half time Rovers were awarded a penalty for handling the ball in the penalty area. Mattie stepped up to try and complete a quick hat trick but the keeper made a great save and Rovers were unable to convert the rebound. In the second half Aidan made a number of very telling breaks from defence creating space for the front players who took advantage of the Wildcats tiredness. Max T scored the third goal when a ball bouncing in the penalty box wasn't cleared and he was able to get something on it to force the ball into the net. Shortly before the end of the game George who had worked very hard throughout on the wing got the goal he deserved to complete a comfortable victory Player of the week - George.
