The High School Studio Orchestra is made up of students from grades 9 through 12 and meets twice a week during the flex period. This group works on music from different genres in an instrumental setting, such as traditional band music, re-orchestrated orchestral pieces, church music from hymns to contemporary Christian music, gospel tunes, cultural pieces (Scottish, Latin America, etc.), jazz, and more. As Finney tends to be a smaller school, the orchestra is proportionally appropriate. This allows students the opportunity for leadership roles, more one-on-one work with the teacher, and a voice in the music selection process. Students also have the opportunity to work on their arranging and composing skills as a part of this class. The orchestra performs in the Christmas concert, Joy Night, and the Spring concert. Students are also required to play in one of the Student Recitals that are held in the Spring and at Graduation in June. Students may choose to participate in the winter (January) or Spring (May) solo festivals held by MCSMA and NYSSMA.
