St. Paul's Episcopal Church

THE STORY
The Rector of a church works on her quilt telling stories. She dies suddenly, leaving the overgrown garden to three homeless people. Why these three. Maggie hears voices, Nick has lost his memory, Simon will never come inside. The play is about survival and hope when the one who brought you hope is gone. Maggie faces her voices, Nick recovers his memory in a hospital, Simon becomes a gardener. In the process of the play they act out various stories, Maggie becomes Mary Magdalene, Morgan le Fey, and a nun. Nick become Nicodemus, Pellinore, and Galileo, Simon becomes Simon the Leper, Simon the Fool, Simon the Cardinal. All in telling stories to each other, they realize their unique gifts.

 THE WINDOWS

The homeless gather in the garden of the Rector watching her at her work.  She uses her quilt to tell stories that capture the attention of the street people.

Stitch by Stitch

 MAGGIE

Maggie is the victim of childhood physical abuse and adult sexual abuse.  One schoolteacher was kind, she remembers him.

Jesus and Mary Magdalene - A Mustard Seed grown tall.  The Rector tells her that nothing is a weed, and from the smallest seed, love can grow.

 NICK

Nick lost his memory and as he was an old man, the Rector called him Nicodemus, after the teacher who sought out Jesus.

As a telescope had captured his imagination, she imagined him up a tree, like Zaccheus, looking for Jesus.

SIMON

Simon was a homeless man, wrapped around a Rock in the Rector's garden.  She named him Simon, after the leper whom Jesus healed.

THE CHILDREN

A child is captured by the stories.

Simon remembers his childhood, and the grandchildren bring the rain.

With Each story told, the quilt grows.  In the center of the story we learn the heart of the Rector's message, that returning to be a little child one can find hope.

Child in Your Dancing

At the end the Rector is remembered with Cathedrals Made of Cloth, honoring all her stories.

BEGINNINGS

Imagine waking in the middle of the night to a phone call of a person extremely excited on the other end about some wonderful dream he has just had.  This was my experience during the blizzard of 1996.  Manos Clemens called at 2:30 in the morning, "I was producing a play on Broadway, and all I can remember is the title -- The Gospel...According to Us.  Charles, if you write the words, I'll set it to music.

 FAST FORWARD

Two years later, Manos died, without a single note written down.  If I did not write this work, it would not happen.  I reached back into my past to an old song called Cathedrals Made of Cloth, cowritten with Todd Payich in honor of the AIDS quilt, and from that began to weave the music in my head.  I called my close friend Rosanna Tufts, Peabody Graduate with perfect pitch and perfect rhythm, and she pulled the music out of my head, onto paper and into a synthesizer.  Her talent soared as she combined my melodies and harmonies into a dramatic glue to form this opera of hope.

PERFORMANCES

We have now performed this work more than 40 times for church ministries and theatrical outreaches including St. Margaret's Episcopal, Silver Spring Presbyterian, Darkover science fiction convention, Four Quarters Farm, Roland Park Presbyterian, and Charlie's Place, the homeless ministry of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church.  The production at the Greenbelt Arts Center networked with the homeless and abused of Prince George's County, especially the work of Streetlights of Bethany and the Family Crisis Center, Inc. of Prince George's County.

Charles Butler Neto  (Playwright/Director/Composer) is a pastor, a singer and songwriter.  He performed supporting roles with the University of Michigan theatre departments, and though he had no speaking lines, he was hooked.  Since then, he has performed the role of the Fairy Queen in Iolanthe (in Alto, beard and all). He was the poet laureate for the local chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism, and has performed as a minstrel for many years. As a minister, he has written a series of midrash performance poetry (Strangers at the Gate) dealing with forgotten voices from the Hebrew and Greek scriptures. He has shepherded According to Us  from its earliest staging, writing the libretto and melodies and creating the role of Nick. He has been both a church and community chorus soloist , including opera chorus with the Bel Canto Singers, and currently with the Rock Creek Singers of the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington.

Todd Payich (Co-Composer and Arranger-"Cathedrals Made of Cloth") was a dynamic singer and songwriter.  Fifteen years ago, I was invited to Blair High School in Silver Spring, MD, to see a presentation of the AIDS quilt.  Across the floor, and up the walls, one was surrounded on every side by panels of memory.  A song spun itself out of my head called "Cathedrals Made of Cloth" telling the story of a the many who have died from all walks of life.  Todd Payich, a talented musician whom I had known from both church and the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington, was able to take my very beginning notes and make an arrangement that soared. Todd wrote music for the Lesbian and Gay Chorus, for church and school gatherings, for many venues.  Unfortunately, he succumbed to HIV 10 years ago, before this play was presented.  His mother is thrilled that we are remembering him and his music through this play.
