Ecologist (Forest Ecosystem & Insect Ecology)

M.Sc. Conservation Biology (University of Alberta)

B.Sc. Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (Simon Fraser University)

I'm a self-proclaimed "nature nut" from BC, interested in the classification and conservation of beetles. More broadly I am interested in natural resources and land management issues in western Canada.

I am most interested in contributing to the knowledge of poorly studied beetle groups in North America, such as the family Latridiidae (= "Corticariidae", "Lathridiidae"), and have been a contributing editor on BugGuide for a number of years to help in that capacity. My ambition is to publish new species records in the family for western Canada.

During my Masters research, I assessed species-habitat associations for nearly 300 beetle species in various qualities of deadwood for use in developing deadwood management protocols in northwestern Alberta. Through my collaboration with partners of the Ecosystem Management Emulating Natural Disturbance (EMEND) experiment, I have had the pleasure to share my research in numerous national and international conference presentations, as well as collaborate on peer-reviewed scientific publications. I have also received some press from the biodiversity findings of my research.

Previous to my masters, I have been involved in various university research projects. Research topics include Insect Behaviour and Integrated Pest Management (Gries Insect Ecology lab - SFU), Population Genetics of Asterinid Sea Stars (Hart Evolutionary Ecology lab - SFU), Avian Ecology and Forest Management (Martin Applied Conservation lab - UBC), and Vegetation Community Ecology and the Impact of Logging Roads (Independent Study - Coastal Temperate Rainforest Ecology - BMSC).

Presently, I reside in Victoria, British Columbia, working for LGL Limited environmental research associates as a Wildlife Biologist and Entomologist. I plan and conduct field programs for long-term wildlife monitoring, perform ecological statistical analyses, and draft technical reports. I continue my entomological work through the identification of ground beetles (Carabidae) and rove beetles (Staphylinidae) for long-term arthropod monitoring projects in reservoirs of the Columbia River Basin in eastern British Columbia.

Previously, I managed contracts for taxonomic identification of beetles and conservation status ranking as an independent contractor and business owner of:

I am also an amateur artist, exploring painting with oil and acrylic based mediums.

I also enjoy nature and abstract photography, home-brewing, and other creations, and like to spend weekends with family, hiking, and fishing.
