The proposed ordinance that would force promoters to be licensed and insured has been tabled. Crisis averted.

However, during my meeting with my alderman, he advised that "once in politics, always." While he didn't blame us for being busy trying to manage our own businesses and lives since July 2007, when this last came up, we have to keep at least abreast of what's going on. Just because we had been given due process on this issue last year, and then dropped out of the picture, didn't mean they wouldn't try again (and obviously did just these past few days).

The fact that it was a blitzkrieg process this time might be indication that they're wise to how easily and quickly we can mobilize, but obviously, we were able to make a difference in just 5 days!

This will come up again (whenever it becomes "untabled"), and if we're to have more and better notice, simply stay in touch with your alderman, and keep involved in the processes of the Daley machine as it effects your life. We have not heard the last of this.


And to think, I bought a Chicago flag to proudly drape on my shoulders tomorrow morning. Another opportunity will present itself.

On May 14th, 2008, at 10am the Chicago City Council will vote on Chapter 4-157, the "Promoters' Ordinance."

This ordinance will force independent promoters to become licensed, regulate the kinds of events that are allowed and change the face of independent Chicago music, arts, and culture.

If you are a promoter, an agent, an artist or a fan, please, please contact your alderman. Their votes are the only chance we have to voice our opposition to this Ordinance. We suggest writing an e-mail, an actual letter, calling their offices or scheduling meetings within the next few days. but please e-mail a personal letter to voice your personal story against the Promoters Ordinance. Also, please contact that e-mail if you're available to come to the City Council meeting on May 14th and help represent Chicago event promoters. While there will not be an opportunity for the public to speak at the hearing, we do hope to have an healthy contingent of protesters present.
