PINA COLADA AND CARROT CAKE CUPCAKES from Sugarbaby's Cupcake Boutique, Houston Yes, I know, ...but after finishing my tour of the Houston Cupcake scene...Sugarbaby's is the best. I still think they could do more with their gorgeous black wrought-iron, and pink shoppe--ice cream(gelato) fresh espresso, not brewed coffee...but these are really minor quibbles, because AT LEAST they have a little dining room to sit, and savor--all the other places in town:CRAVE(hate 'em),CELEBRITY, SPRINKLES(franchise-hate 'em), have NO seating{pay and get out!} are cracker boxes...you can barely fit 15 customers in their places. Space can be forgiven..how long does it take to eat a cupcake, but all of these other places have adopted this *SPRINKLES* look to their cupcakes: the *toadstool*. No overt creativity to the decoration of the little cake. Just a tasteful(?/) little fondant(hate it) symbol on the top to designate flavor. Cupcakes should be cute, gorgeous, fantastic, over-the-top, whimsical, silly, funny, at least indicative of the flavors wthin. SHHHHEEEESSSSHHHH....!!!!!!!!! We are going to Austin soon, and there are even more Cupcake havens to explore. And, hey, it is aUSTIN--THE BEST URBAN part of Tejas, well, and country part too..(except... for parts of Big Bend,.... and the Guadalupe Mts....and Corpus...) Oh, I forgot, these cupcakes were scrummy..chopped dried pineapple in the pina Colada, and a big coconut taste in the icing..see the mounds of toasted coconut...and the carrot cake was moist and cinnamony without being gummy and dense like Crave Cupcakes carrot cake. Excellent...if only they would get some ice cream..I am telling you their store looks like one of those great ice cream parlours from yesteryear. PEANUT BUTTER CHOCOLATE AND PUMPKIN SPICE CUPCAKES FROM SPRINKLES-HOUSTON, TEXAS
I still hate this cupcake franchise, and their devil spawn-Crave Cupcake here in Houston. Sprinkles I guess is responsible for the boring cookie cutter *toadstool* look in cupcakes, that I have seen in a few independent bakeries. Hate it. I don't like the munky, too moist, gobby texture of the cake either--more like muffins(and inferior ones at that) There was NO peanut butter taste, and the chocolate had a really weird taste to it--not a hidden spice..don't know what--the Pumpkin spice had a nice flavor, but had that god-awful gobby texture. I say it again...I want to see a cupcake that has some whimsy, creativity, and originality at least in the decorative presentation, if not in the cupcake flavors..we are going to Austin soon, where they have alot more cupcakeries and awesome bakeries, and my nephew has informed(as a roaming UT freshman)eons better....
